For more than 11 years, Big Picture Film Club has championed independent filmmakers through screenings, editorial coverage, audience engagement and culturally relevant film events. Now, building on that public-facing work, we are expanding into a new area: corporate screenings.

Following our 2025 collaborations with partners including Citibank, Clyde & Co and Covington, we are continuing to work with major UK companies on an internal screening programme designed to support DEI, wellbeing and awareness-led conversations in the workplace. These events pair films with educational discussion, often including live or virtual Q&As, to help organisations engage staff in a more meaningful way.

We are now inviting filmmakers to submit films for consideration.

We are primarily looking for educational short films, ideally 15–30 minutes in length, although we will consider longer works if they can be edited into a shorter version. We are especially keen to hear from UK-based filmmakers who have films that align with key UK awareness themes, including Mental Health, Disability & Accessibility, Neurodiversity, Women & Gender Equity, LGBTQ+ Inclusion, Race & Ethnicity, Workplace Inclusion, Environment & Climate, and Community & Belonging.

Films can be in post-production or currently on the festival circuit. Private Vimeo or YouTube links are welcome, though we are generally not seeking films already freely available to the public. If filmmakers or cast members are available to take part in in-person or virtual Q&As, that is a major plus.

To submit, simply complete the form below. If your film is a fit for one of our partners, we will be in touch. Rights holders will be paid for any screenings, and filmmakers will retain full ownership and control of their work. We are not acquiring films for distribution — we are creating new opportunities for them to be seen.

Letitia Wright has stepped behind the camera with Highway To The Moon—a poetic, surreal short that turns grief into grace. In our new video interview, Wright opens up about the “imposter syndrome” she felt directing for the first time, and why she embraced an ethereal, dreamlike style to capture a purgatory-like state between loss and healing. Actors Kenyah Sandy (Micah) and Lamar Waves (Trey) join us to speak about the film’s emphasis on brotherhood and how that bond shaped their performances.

Commissioned by WePresent (WeTransfer) and produced via 3.16 Productions, the film is Oscar® and BAFTA-qualified, selected for the BFI London Film Festival, and nominated for Best Sci-Fi at HollyShorts.

Rooted in the aftermath of youth violence and inspired by a real tragedy close to the filmmaker, Highway To The Moon channels personal pain into a lyrical meditation on memory, resilience and community.

Watch the full interview on our YouTube channel to hear Letitia Wright, Kenyah Sandy and Lamar Waves break down the film’s imagery, influences and emotional stakes.

In Dovecote, Italian visual artist Marco Perego delivers a hauntingly beautiful exploration of prison life and the trauma experienced by incarcerated women. Set within the Giudecca women’s prison in Venice, the film follows the final hours of a prisoner’s sentence as she prepares for release. Played with extraordinary subtlety by Avatar and Guardians of the Galaxy star Zoe Saldaña, Dovecote provides a raw and emotional window into the cyclical nature of imprisonment and recidivism.

Filmed in a continuous single-shot style, Dovecote masterfully captures the claustrophobia and emotional intensity of life behind bars. Perego’s visual storytelling, combined with Saldaña’s deeply nuanced portrayal, creates a powerful narrative despite the film’s limited dialogue. The camera lingers on the faces of the prisoners, many of whom are played by real-life inmates, adding an additional layer of authenticity to the story. Each glance and gesture conveys the deep-seated trauma and fears these women face, particularly the haunting reality that many are survivors of physical and sexual abuse.

Saldaña’s role as the soon-to-be-released prisoner is nothing short of captivating. Known for her action-packed roles in blockbuster films like Guardians of the Galaxy and Avatar, she strips down her performance in Dovecote to its rawest form. In this introspective role, her ability to convey complex emotions through silence and body language serves as a masterclass in acting. It’s a departure from her usual larger-than-life characters, but one that proves her versatility as a performer.

The film doesn’t shy away from addressing the real-world issues of recidivism and the trauma-to-prison pipeline that disproportionately affects women. Perego, whose visual work has often tackled themes of transformation, uses Dovecote to shine a light on how unresolved trauma and systemic failings continue to trap women in cycles of incarceration. It’s a timely and sobering message, one that resonates deeply in today’s discussions on criminal justice reform.

With Dovecote already receiving critical acclaim and qualifying for the 2025 Academy Awards, it’s a film that not only showcases Saldaña’s acting prowess but also sheds light on the often-overlooked stories of women in the prison system.

Femi is happily coasting on honeymoon avenue with his new girlfriend Chanice. However, his anxiety begins to rise after she reveals that she has the genetic condition sickle cell anaemia.

What’s It About?

The recently released short film His Sickled Journey, serves as both an educational short film highlighting an important medical condition and also a great romantic comedy about two people finding love. Written by Phil Ossai (who also directed the film) & David Ajayi (who plays the co-lead, Femi), His Sickled Journey follows Femi & Chanice’s (played by Vivienne Iseobor) blossoming relationship as Femi has he understands more about his partner’s condition. The short film does a great job of highlighting the seriousness of Sickle Cell Disease, whilst providing moments of comic relief and a loving story that make the film approachable for teenage audiences. As a result, it is available free to watch on YouTube via Million Youth Media.

What’s Sickle Cell Disease?

Sickle cell is a disorder of the haemoglobin in the red blood cells.
Haemoglobin is the substance in red blood cells that is responsible for the colour of the cell and for carrying oxygen around the body. The condition can only be inherited, providing that both parents have the sickle cell gene.

The main symptoms of sickle cell disorder are anaemia and episodes of severe pain. Pain occurs when the cells change shape after oxygen has been released. The red blood cells then stick together, causing blockages in the small blood vessels.

These painful episodes are referred to as sickle cell crises. They are treated with strong painkillers such as morphine to control the pain.

There are an estimated 15,000 people in the U.K currently with the condition, with many more being carriers of gene carriers. In the U.K., the black community is disproportionately affected, with up to 1 in 4 people of West African descent being carriers of the gene, and 1 in 10 people from Caribbean backgrounds having the gene.

You can watch His Sickled Journey on YouTube below.

Netflix is moving to expand its film content in Africa. Previously Netflix has invested large sums of money to help with the production of films and TV shows in regions like South Korea. This time it is attempting to nurture filmmakers in several African countries. Today we will look at the measures Netflix is implementing to help filmmakers across the continent. And we will also analyse what this can mean for the various film industries in Africa.

What is Netflix Doing?

This past year, Netflix announced two initiatives to facilitate filmmaking growth across sub-Saharan Africa. Firstly, they announced the short film competition African Folktales, Reimagined. Made in partnership with UNESCO. The competition allowed filmmakers across various African countries to pitch short film ideas focusing on telling classic cultural tales with modern twists. The competition’s winners would then receive a $75,000 budget and training to produce the films. With Netflix releasing the finished projects in 2022.

And the company also detailed plans for the new Netflix Creative Equity Scholarship Fund. Which will offer scholarships for film and TV students across the continent. Initially, $1 million has been contributed. This money goes towards helping media students with tuition, accommodation, course material, and living expenses during their studies. It begins operation this academic year in South Africa. Students from the South African Development Community wanting to study there were also eligible. Netflix plans on rolling the scheme out to more parts of Africa soon.

What Does This Mean For Film Makers Across Africa?

As with Netflix’s prior investments into international markets, this represents a great opportunity for emerging and established filmmakers. Netflix’s scholarship program can provide underprivileged media students with the ability to pursue education in their chosen fields. Additionally, the short film competition and the drive for more content generally, allows creatives old and new the chance to have their work seen on a platform with a huge reach. Not only showcasing their talents to worldwide audiences but increasingly across the continent itself.

With the schemes covering a range of countries and cultures, it will also allow the countries of Africa to be shown in their diverse glory. Rather than being shown as a monolith, as many Western films portray the continent. And these efforts to help develop Africa’s creative industries could lead to the creation of 20 million jobs. And kickstart a thriving film industry, thereby ensuring more opportunities for years.

However, there are some concerns. Because Netflix is a business it will be aiming to showcase projects that will garner wide interest. Meaning potentially culturally interesting ideas might not be presented. Instead, Netflix may favour appealing to the largest possible audience. For example filmmakers like Imoh Umoren claim streaming services are primarily looking for English language content in the region. Therefore providing a rather shallow view of various African cultures and art. As well as excluding a lot of artists. Finally, with Netflix only investing a small amount of money in the region (a fraction of what it invested in South Korea), the venture feels comparatively half-hearted.

Conclusion

Netflix’s bid to kickstart new opportunities for African filmmakers is a promising one. Providing creatives with the ability to make content for their renowned platform will give them attention internationally and within Netflix’s budding subscriber base across Africa. And scholarships for media students in the SADC region allow new creatives to pursue their passion. Along with potentially creating demand for millions of new jobs. However, Netflix’s current strategy needs some work. To avoid reducing the continent’s unique, diverse art and its hard work solely to a tool for Netflix’s advancement with international markets.

The streaming wars are well underway, and while not every service has launched yet, they are starting to get expensive as people decide how many streaming services they actually need. While some platforms are getting by having access shows like “The Office” or “Friends” others are spending millions on exclusive content that people just have to see, whether for watercooler moments or awards potential.

Quibi, however, is trying something completely different- all of its programmings will be around 10 minutes or less (The name is a mash-up of “quick bites”). Its content is designed to be watched on a smartphone or tablet, perfect for on your break or waiting for the bus, similar to a lot of Snapchat’s content. but with added production value, as well as wider variety.

Who is supporting it?

Just some of the people developing projects for Quibi (Fortune, 2019)

The company has raised over $1 billion investment which it plans to spend on content, with 7,000 short episodes as a target. It has even attracted some big names, including Guillermo Del Toro, Sam Raimi, Jason Blum, Anna Kendrick, Laurence Fishburne and Kiefer Sutherland all have projects that will debut on the platform, in a variety of different genres. “Spielberg’s After Dark” (Yes, that Spielberg) will only be available after dark (get it?) and will be unavailable during the daylight.

This kind of experimentation forms much of Quibi’s ethos, as well as most short films in general. The shorter format allows for some interesting results, with filmmakers being put under a short time limit or having a smaller budget they often have to get creative. Quibi hopes to be more creative and unique with its content than other streaming providers like Netflix or Amazon Prime.

Short films have often been an important step on the road to feature films, with many directors honing their skills with shorts before directing their first feature. Films such as Taika Waititi’s “What We Do In The Shadows”, Damien Chazelle’s “Whiplash” and the original “Saw” film all started as short films before finally becoming the films we’re familiar with (The short film versions of these and a few others can be viewed online). These are often submitted to festivals such as the London Short Film Festival or Aesthetica Film Festival, in the hopes of gaining an audience. Some even have their own premieres before being posted online (Big Picture Film Club sometimes helps with this).

How will this change streaming?

<button

Quibi is designed to be used on either a smartphone or tablet (credit: Quibi)

With such big creators focusing on short-form entertainment, Quibi could attract a lot of viewers that don’t have time in their lives to sit down and watch a three hour epic like The Irishman or binge all of Mr Robot. People have busy lives and, if Quibli is successful, we could see more content geared towards it. Short films could become much more popular. Feature films get released on platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime, could we get short films released on there too? Having names like Spielberg, Del Toro would help create buzz, and move away from the “student film” label many shorts are given. It is also giving some projects a new lease of life. “When the Stree Lights Go on” was originally envisioned as a feature, then a series, and will now premiere as a series on Quibi.

How other platforms adapt to Quibi is a mystery, as it will launch in April of 2020, it is unlikely that the big streaming sites will suddenly only have short programming, but we may see a rise in it. As Co-Founder Jeffrey Katzenberg said “Quibi is not a substitute or a competitor for television” rather it aims to have your attention instead of YouTube, Snapchat, or other apps used on your phone during the day. Although some people may rather wait for a full season and watch the short episodes all at once. The main issue it could come across is the subscription. Why would people pay when they can watch YouTube for free? (Which also has it’s own subscription model). Whether people will want to spend their commute watching “Biggest Little Cook-Off” or scrolling through Instagram remains to be seen.

If you would like to sign up to Quibi’s newsletter or apply to be a part of their team, you can do so here

“People who gaslight tend to use psychological manipulation to make you believe their reality.”

Written by and starring actor Tatjana Anders and directed by Top Tarasin, the short film explores the use of gaslighting within a relationship. The film follows Alicia (played by Tatjana Anders) who meets Mark (played by Kyle James) at a coffee shop after he kindly offers to pay for her coffees. On their first date, we see a glimpse of Mark’s manipulating ways when he insists she was late. His behaviour quickly escalates to controlling her, isolating her from her friends and we begin to see how subtle the control and manipulation can be.

Tatjana Anders with guests at the “Your Reality” premiere screening

It was writer and actor, Tatjana Anders’ mission to raise awareness on the topic of gaslighting after having read an article, it clicked that a friend of hers had experienced something similar and she did not know what it was until she saw the term existed.

Tatjana explains she read books and talked to therapists about the topic which helped shaped the story. A crowdfunding campaign to raise funding became an awareness campaign when unexpectedly she began receiving messages from people who shared similar experiences.

The short doesn’t allow us to explore the many layers to this topic but does builds the characters and is set up in a way that could very well see it as a full-length feature which is exactly what the plan is for Tatjana.

What’s the main thing she wants people to take away from this? “Sharing the message – provoke people to ask questions – what’s the cause? Do I know someone who has experienced this? Have I experienced something like this?”

When director Top Tarasin first read the script he thought it was great.

“It broke the format in that it doesn’t feel like a short film. All the elements in a short usually lead to one point like a gimmick or punchline, whereas this was atmospheric, it felt like we were in the middle of a feature, it took it’s time.”
-Top Tarasin, Director

Interpreting the topic for the big screen had its challenges, Top had to limit what he wanted to say, “there are so many angles to explore – abuser, the people around the situation. We needed to focus on one thing – the perspective of the victim, everything had to enforce that perspective and this, in turn, informed the visual language. The choices we made were made from one perspective.”

Not a topical director, Top is more into universal themes: humans, love, revenge. The topic of gaslighting was different to his usual work, it’s very specific and the focus was the humanity of it, which was a person suffering.

He adds his own perspective of the topic to the film: “the profound sorrow that comes with the loss of time: how did I get here? This is what I wanted to inject into the film.”

“WELCOME TO BRITANNIA. TOGETHER WE STAND ALONE.”

Following its screening at our Conspiracy event earlier this year, psychological thriller, Transmission has officially been released online. Varun Raman & Tom Hancock who serve as writers and directors of the film describe it as “an abstraction of our fears over the future of post-Brexit Britain and many western countries that are now adopting protectionist and isolationist policies through manipulation and contempt.”

Transmission establishes tension between Dr. Sam (James Hyland) & Leonard (Michael Shon) right from the word go. What we are treated to is an intriguing and warped psychological game of one room cat and mouse for Leonard’s freedom – all with a stylistic nod to Stanley Kubrick. A must watch, but not for the faint-hearted.

Verdict: (5 / 5)

Big Picture Film Club’s First Look series takes a look at upcoming films that have grabbed our attention, with the aim of finding out more about the release and the creative minds behind the projects.

Winter Ridge is a crime-thriller set in the fictitious English town of Blackrock (filming took place in North Devon). The central plot of the film revolves around a team of detectives tracking down a serial killer targetting the elderly. Winter Ridge even made it’s way to the 2017 Cannes Film Festival picking up distribution later in the year. The independent film has managed to bring together a remarkable cast: Hannah Waddingham (Game of Thrones, Les Misérables), Alan Ford (Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels) and Olwen Catherine Kelly (The Autopsy of Jane Doe). The crew behind the camera are as equally with the film overseen by award-winning director Dom Lenoir and producers Nancy Bressolles (Rise of the Krays) and Chris Hardman who has worked on films such as Avatar, Star Wars and Kingsman.

We were able to have a Q & A with Director & Producer Dom Lenior to find out more about Winter Ridge, what to expect and when the planned release is for…

Finance is always a big issue when producing an independent feature film, how did you go about funding this film? What challenges did you face in doing this?

Dom: It has been a case of building up a track record and work ethic over quite a few years as individuals and through Camelot. We funded the film largely through the British SEIS (Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme) tax incentives and with private investors. We came to them having formed a relationship on previous projects and due to the quality of work or various shorts we had made prior, as well as a slate of films for the future, we put forward a visible track record in quality and a ready to go film. Having attached cast, high-level crew, and sales estimates definitely smoothed this process over as well and for a cinematic independent film felt like a better route than funding bodies.

How have you been able to put your own spin on the crime thriller genre and what were your sources of inspiration for the film?

Prisoners and Insomnia were big influences and inspiration in terms of the mood and feel of the movie. The initial inspiration came from the writer Ross Williams whose family had suffered from degenerative diseases including Alzheimer’s. The idea was to create a film that was an exciting psychological thriller format but touched upon some of the difficulties families face with someone suffering from an illness. My main goal creatively was to create a film that didn’t feel overly British cop and small close-knit town but something more ominous and isolated. This involved taking a lot of mood influences from Scandinavian and American Detective shows and bringing a really cinematic and atmospheric approach to the visuals, music, characters and setting.

Winter Ridge touches upon how do you go about tackling the subject of Alzheimer’s in a way that is authentic and does not trivialise it?

Mostly the aim was to look at Alzheimer’s in a sense of showing some of the situations and problems sufferers have gone through. We tried to not place too much judgement on any course of action and if anything I think the film hints that there are no easy answers and it is more about shining a light on some of the problems people and their families face.

The film has a crew (both behind and in front of the camera) that have worked on numerous big budget films – how did the film crew and cast come together?

A lot of the connections have come through Camelot; Matt and I have worked with a number of the cast and crew also. This has been something that has naturally developed through years of collaboration on ambitious shorts, meeting them on high budget films and we are lucky enough to have people at that level who believe in both our work and our approach to films enough to have continued collaborating.

How was the experience of screening at Cannes?

We released our teaser trailer at Cannes which received a really good response from the market, within a day we had already sold a major market and interest was high to see the film.

What do you hope people take away from this film?

Reconsidering their views on life and death, how we relate to our families, and how far we will go for the people who are in danger or we love.

Winter Ridge is slated to be released in late spring both in the U.K and internationally. We will continue to keep you updated on the release of the film. Watch the behind the scenes trailer below.

We all like surprises – who doesn’t? At Big Picture Film Club, part of what makes our job so cool is that we are able to find hidden gems in the expansive film world and do our part in bringing them to the forefront. One such example is the short film, Anchor, by photographer and director, Madeleine Morlet. Although only 9 minutes long, there is not a second wasted in this gripping power play between two lovers, exploring sexual dependency and complex emotions in an increasingly strained relationship.

In Madeleine’s own words, “Anchor is exploring feelings, by coming at it from a place of rigid constraints it was also possible to explore the dullness of extreme feeling. The piece captures a woman as she reaches the full saturation of what she is able to feel, to the point where everything flatlines and nothing but a dull ache remains”. We took the opportunity to have a few words with Madeleine to find out more about what she is up to and to discover more about Anchor…

Big Picture Film Club: What was your motivation in creating “Anchor”?

Madeleine Morlet: The easiest way to answer this question would be to say that Anchor wasn’t motivated by any specific cause, it was motivated by what was then, and continues to be now, a personal objective to make work.

BPFC: The overarching theme of “Anchor” appears to be Power, more specifically the use of sexual power in relationships – would we be correct in thinking this?

MM: I would say that is accurate. Reflecting on my own experience I find that often it is through another person’s eyes that you can really see yourself honestly. I like to think about power and control in relationships. In making Anchor I felt that I could walk in either characters shoes. The dynamic between two people in terms of attraction, desire and sexuality affect this power balance and the needs that drive individuals in relationships can vary greatly.

BPFC: What are you hoping people take from watching this film?

MM: It’s difficult for me to imagine this film having a wide audience, so for those who do see it my greatest hope would be that it produces an emotional response.

BPFC: Your photography work is very captivating, striking and powerful – was it your intention for “Anchor” to have a similar feel to your photography work?

MM: My intention was to make films but a lot of time and resources go into making even a short piece. With this in mind, I found that photography was a way I could actively engage these skills on a regular basis. Anchor was born from my first photography series and each frame was built from one of these original photographs, the images were then used again as a reference for the grade. So yes, it was intentional that the film has a similar feel to my photography work.

BPFC: Is this your first short film? What creative and technical challenges did you face making Anchor?

MM: I consider this to be my first short film. It eventually took 18 months from conception to completion to make Anchor. There were a lot of challenges and setbacks in making the piece, as there often are with zero-budget short films. The script, which was based on real experiences, was too unrealistic, it took six months to cast Delphine in the role of Olivia and with so much emphasis on the sound it was more than half a year to complete the score. Ultimately I approached the entire process with patience and acceptance, this film was made only on my schedule so we didn’t have to hit any deadlines – which meant it had plenty of space to overcome these creative and technical challenges.

BPFC: What is next for you and “Anchor”?

MM: Anchor is being submitted to festivals, which is a learning curve in itself, and my plan is to continue working as I am.
