Join us for a special screening of Fight Like A Girl at selected ODEON cinemas across the UK on Monday 28th September, as part of Diverse Cinema. The screening includes a pre-recorded conversation with director Matthew Leutwyler, lead actor Ama Qamata and Big Picture Film Club Co-Founder Presh Williams.
Based on true events, the drama follows Safi, a young Congolese woman – based on the life of Clarck Ntambwe, who also features in the film – who escapes an illegal mineral mine after two years in captivity. Arriving in the border city of Goma, she struggles to rebuild her life until a chance encounter introduces her to an all-female boxing club.
Under the guidance of a former child soldier turned coach, Safi discovers that boxing demands more than a powerful punch. The ring becomes a place to confront her trauma, find community and imagine a future beyond survival.
Leutwyler filmed in East Congo and Rwanda, casting real members of the women’s boxing team alongside professional actors. Combining a scripted story with documentary filming techniques, the production draws on the people and places at its heart.
