A new London event series is bringing dating back offline with a cinema twist.

Created by Big Picture Film Club with matchmaking service Introducing Two, Film & Flirt mixes speed-friending, themed games and casual conversation with an independent rom-com screening. The first event takes place at Genesis Cinema on Tuesday 14th April, with more dates planned through the summer.

The series is aimed at singles feeling the effects of “swipe fatigue.” Research cited by the organisers says 78% of dating app users feel burned out, but keep swiping because they don’t know where else to meet people.

“Many dating apps have left people exhausted and disconnected,” said Urvisha Patel, creator of Film & Flirt and co-founder of Big Picture Film Club. “We’re creating a space where you can meet someone face-to-face, over drinks, with no algorithms involved.”

The film screening for the first event will be the British romantic comedy Due Dating, a 90-minute feature that follows Cherry, a young woman determined not to let pregnancy derail her dating life, and Cole, a blogger trying to better understand modern relationships. With the tagline “Young, free…and pregnant,” the film explores love, timing and the unpredictable ways people connect.

Few recent short films have landed with the force of Rock, Paper, Scissors. Tense, cerebral, and resolutely unglamorous, Franz Böhm’s BAFTA-winning war drama offers a frontline perspective that feels both urgently specific and universally human. Anchored in the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war but refusing spectacle, the film centres instead on endurance — the quiet, devastating choices made by civilians simply trying to keep others alive.

Based on true events, Rock, Paper, Scissors follows Ivan, a 17-year-old Ukrainian boy, and his father as they run a makeshift hospital from inside a bunker while fighting rages above them. When an approaching platoon threatens their fragile sanctuary, the pair are forced into a decision that no one — let alone a child — should ever have to make.

The film recently won Best British Short Film at the 2025 BAFTA Awards and has since been shortlisted for the Academy Awards® Live Action Short Film, marking it as one of the most significant short films of the year. We spoke with writer-director Franz Böhm about the origins of the story, his approach to scale and restraint, and what these milestones mean to him.

Presh Williams: Rock, Paper, Scissors is based on actual events. How did you come across the story?

Franz Bohm: I’ve met Ivan, who became the main source of inspiration for this project, in England when he was a teenager. As we spent more time together, Ivan began to share what he had experienced back home. It was raw, personal, and deeply human. What started as a friendship soon became a creative collaboration. Together, we wrote the screenplay for what would become Rock, Paper, Scissors.

Working with Ivan remains one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. His clarity, courage, and sense of purpose shaped every part of this project. Even after he returned to Ukraine, his spirit stayed with us. It guided the team, the performances, and the tone. He gave the story its soul.

PW: RPS could be equally as powerful as a 10-minute film or as a 30-minute film. How did you decide on what aspects of Ivan’s story you would include in the short film?

FB: It’s something we discussed a lot during the writing and editing process. From the very beginning, we knew that Rock, Paper, Scissors had to feel like a complete experience, not just a snapshot. The film had to carry the emotional weight of Ivan’s story. The claustrophobia of the bunker, the fragility of youth in wartime, and the impossible choices he faces. All within a limited timeframe.

We experimented with longer and shorter versions, but ultimately landed on 20 minutes because it allowed us to stay close to Ivan’s emotional arc without diluting the intensity. Too short, and we risked losing the buildup of dread and responsibility that weighs on him. Too long, and we might have drifted away from the urgency and focus that the story demands.

At its core, this film is about a boy who has to grow up in a single day. Every scene we kept had to serve that arc, not just narratively, but emotionally. It wasn’t about showing everything that happened, but showing enough for the audience to feel what it meant.

PW: Have people who knew Ivan seen the film? How has support been from the Ukrainian community?

FB: Ivan himself saw multiple versions of our cut, and it was wonderful to collaborate with him. It became a shared creative journey, and I learned so much from his honesty and clarity.

Since his passing, I’ve been incredibly moved by the response from the Ukrainian community. People who knew him, or who recognise their own experiences in the film, have reached out. I’m grateful for the many messages of support. What’s meant a great deal to me are the community-led screenings that have taken place in Ukraine. People have organised gatherings in basements, schools, and cultural centres, often in difficult conditions, to share the film with others. That kind of grassroots response is incredibly powerful.

Their support has been so generous, and I carry that with me every time we show the film.

PW: From your work in Dear Future Children (to now), a key aspect of your work seems to be profiling how people in extreme adversity overcome their circumstances. Would you say that is a fair characterisation of your work?

FB: Yes, I think that’s a fair characterisation but I’d maybe frame it slightly differently.

What drives me as a filmmaker is a deep fascination with the human capacity for dignity and resilience, especially when people are pushed to the edge. From Dear Future Children to Rock, Paper, Scissors, I’ve been drawn to stories where individuals are forced to make impossible choices under extreme pressure.

I don’t approach these stories as case studies of suffering. I approach them as portraits of courage, resistance, and moral complexity. What interests me is not just the hardship itself, but how people retain their sense of self, how they connect to others, and how they keep going even when the world seems to fall apart around them.

PW: You won the Best Short Film at the 2025 BAFTAs and are now shortlisted for the Oscars. What do these incredible milestones mean for you?

FB: It’s been incredibly humbling. Winning the BAFTA was a moment I’ll never forget — not just because of the recognition itself, but because of what it represents: that this story, born from a very real and painful place, resonated with people on a wider scale. Being shortlisted for the Oscars now is another overwhelming moment. It means that the hard work, the risks we took, and the trust of our Ukrainian cast and collaborators have led to something that really travels beyond borders.

But more than personal pride, these milestones are a reminder that stories like Ivan’s matter. That cinema still has the power to give voice to people in impossible situations. It encourages me, and hopefully others, to keep pushing for stories that are urgent, impactful, and grounded in human experience.

Rock, Paper, Scissors is currently shortlisted for the Academy Award® for Live Action Short Film, with the 98th Academy Awards taking place on 15 March 2026 — a moment that could see this urgent, human story recognised on cinema’s biggest stage.

Letitia Wright has stepped behind the camera with Highway To The Moon—a poetic, surreal short that turns grief into grace. In our new video interview, Wright opens up about the “imposter syndrome” she felt directing for the first time, and why she embraced an ethereal, dreamlike style to capture a purgatory-like state between loss and healing. Actors Kenyah Sandy (Micah) and Lamar Waves (Trey) join us to speak about the film’s emphasis on brotherhood and how that bond shaped their performances.

Commissioned by WePresent (WeTransfer) and produced via 3.16 Productions, the film is Oscar® and BAFTA-qualified, selected for the BFI London Film Festival, and nominated for Best Sci-Fi at HollyShorts.

Rooted in the aftermath of youth violence and inspired by a real tragedy close to the filmmaker, Highway To The Moon channels personal pain into a lyrical meditation on memory, resilience and community.

Watch the full interview on our YouTube channel to hear Letitia Wright, Kenyah Sandy and Lamar Waves break down the film’s imagery, influences and emotional stakes.

Big Picture Film Club’s documentary Fighters took an important step in its impact campaign this week with a special screening in the UK Parliament (1 September 2025), followed by a roundtable on how to accelerate visibility and inclusion in sport. Hosted by Labour MP Henry Tufnell, the event brought together policymakers, sector leaders and advocates to discuss practical routes to recognition and support for disability boxing and disability sport more widely.

At the heart of the film—and the parliamentary conversation—is Chris McEwen, founder of Great Britain Disability Boxing (GBDB), whose work in Pembrokeshire has demonstrated how accessible boxing programmes change lives. “I want to thank Henry Tufnell MP and Meg Richards for their support in bringing Fighters to Parliament,” McEwen said. “This screening is an incredible opportunity to highlight the progress being made in building a more inclusive community.”

The post-screening discussion featured Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson (Chair of Sport Wales, Paralympic legend) and Kim Leadbeater MP (representing the Department for Sport), focusing on recognition pathways, safeguarding, funding frameworks and how grassroots clubs can be embedded in local health and inclusion strategies. Following the film’s June theatrical release, this parliamentary moment marks a new phase for Fighters—moving from awareness to policy influence. (A Welsh Parliament/Senedd screening is also confirmed for the coming months.)

Directed and produced by Michael Grimmett and Jack Tompkins, Fighters follows Matt Edwards, a lower-limb amputee boxer fighting to secure his amateur license—and, in doing so, confronting the systemic barriers disabled people face every day. Alongside McEwen, the film includes contributions from Baroness Grey-Thompson, Jodie Ounsley (Gladiators), Peter Hull MBE, Isaac Harvey MBE and others—showcasing a coalition of athletes and advocates pushing for change.

For Big Picture Film Club, Fighters embodies our mission: to connect films with audiences and turn conversation into action. As the film continues screenings and stakeholder engagements, we’ll share updates on measurable outcomes—club referrals, policy commitments and funding wins—stemming from the dialogue it has sparked.

From sun-splashed warehouse mornings to the pulse of fast-cut breakbeats, the Midlands rave scene between 1988 and 1995 shaped a generation, and “Hold Tight Raver” is here to tell their story. Co-directors Keith Allott and Rory Booth have just released this feature-length YouTube documentary, crowdfunded by passionate fans, that traces the region’s journey from underground drum and bass parties to the splintering of jungle techno in the mid-’90s.

What to Expect

• Insider Voices: “I’d never felt the bass hit me like that—pure freedom,” recalls one dancer, setting the tone for more than thirty interviews. You’ll hear DJs describe midnight tape-trading networks between Leicester and Birmingham, while club-goers conjure “sweat-soaked floors and makeshift light rigs” that transformed industrial spaces into euphoric havens.
• Rare Visuals: Digitised flyers, hand-painted posters and grainy camcorder clips are woven together to illustrate the DIY ethos of the era. From back-garden raves to one-off “free parties,” every frame underscores how creativity thrived under the radar.
• Scene Evolution: As jungle techno splintered into drum & bass, interviewees reflect on moments of loss and reinvention: “When the breaks spawned new subgenres, I felt both excited and nostalgic for the unity we once had.”

Why You Should Watch

Produced entirely from public donations and a sold-out proof-of-concept screening at Phoenix Cinema, Hold Tight Raver is grassroots at its core. Unlike mainstream music histories, “Hold Tight Raver” centres the voices of everyday participants—from bedroom DJs with dusty reel-to-reel decks to club-regular dancers whose careers took flight on breakbeats. You’ll discover how those “splintered genres” mirrored broader social shifts—and how nostalgia keeps that spirit alive today.

Watch “Hold Tight Raver” now on YouTube and become part of the party: experience how a Midlands subculture shaped lives, sounds and memories that still reverberate across UK dance floors.

London’s newest film event is set to inspire the next generation of storytellers. On Friday 18th July 2025, the inaugural Collective Film Festival London (CFFL) opens its doors at the Collective Arts Community Trust, offering premieres, masterclasses, and a dedicated platform for underrepresented voices.

“I created CFFL as a response to the ongoing challenges facing the UK film and TV industry—from the impact of COVID and the strikes to the continued lack of representation across the sector,” says Festival Director Anthony Vander. “Our mission is to bridge the gap between emerging and established filmmakers. In five years, I’d love to see our first-time filmmakers establish themselves with new shorts or their first feature, maintaining a strong network and community.”

A project of the Collective Arts Community Trust, a UK-registered charity, CFFL advances arts education for underrepresented young people. Its wider mission includes organising accessible public screenings and workshops, and offering mentorship and skills development to nurture long-term careers.

Festival highlights include the UK premiere of Big Picture Film Club’s environmental dive documentary 50 Hours Underwater, chronicling Maldivian diver Shaff Naeem’s record-setting 50-hour descent to raise awareness of ocean plastic pollution. Alongside screenings, CFFL features hands-on workshops in iPhone filmmaking, budgeting, and scriptwriting, led by industry experts.

With ambitions to become a BAFTA-qualifying festival, CFFL not only showcases exceptional talent but also fosters the networks and skills that can disrupt the industry for the better. Watch the launch video below and secure your tickets to CFFL 2025.

As part of the UK release of Fighters, we’re highlighting Changemakers across the country—charities and non-profit organisations using sport and storytelling to inspire social change and inclusion. Just as Fighters celebrates resilience in the ring, The Frank Bruno Foundation channels boxing’s discipline into wellbeing for those battling mental ill-health.

A Punch for Mental Health

Founded in 2017, The Frank Bruno Foundation provides a safe, supportive space for anyone aged 13 and up facing anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or other challenges. Its flagship Round by Round programme pairs eight weeks of non-contact boxing training with tailored wrap-around support—boosting confidence, self-esteem, and discipline in every participant.

From Youth to Workforce

Originally focused on young people, the foundation expanded in 2020 to serve older adults juggling work and mental health. Referrals—by professionals, friends, or self-referral—begin with an early assessment, ensuring interventions match individual needs. Programs are open to residents of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with bespoke support for those as young as ten.

Frank’s Vision & Advocacy

Boxing legend and Mental Health Ambassador Frank Bruno MBE founded the charity to give back to his community. His candid discussions of bipolar disorder—and how exercise helped him cope—have shattered taboos in the public eye. Through his autobiography and media appearances, Frank’s honesty empowers others to seek help and speak out.

Campaigns That Deliver Knockouts to Stigma

#LetsClearTheCloud invites people to share personal journeys, helping early recognition of symptoms and showing no one faces mental ill-health alone.

#KnockoutStigma tackles judgment head-on: nearly half of respondents fear speaking up about mental health. This campaign offers a safe platform for testimony, sparking conversations that save lives.

Building Community, One Jab at a Time

Participants describe Round by Round as life-changing: learning footwork in the gym translates into agility in daily challenges. The charity also partners with local mental health services, ensuring participants have access to counselling, peer support, and employment advice.

As part of the UK release of Fighters, we’re spotlighting Changemakers—charities and non-profit organisations using film to inspire social change and inclusion. Just as Fighters highlights resilience in the face of systemic barriers, All 4 Inclusion combats the epidemic of loneliness among disabled people through community, creativity, and conversation

From Personal Struggle to National Community

Founder Scott Whitney became disabled overnight in 2020 and, after his FND (Functional Neurological Disorder) diagnosis, launched All 4 Inclusion in 2022 to tackle isolation in the disability community. What began as a single peer-support group has grown into a vibrant online network offering photography, art, poetry, quizzes and more—each designed to connect, uplift, and empower participants.

Innovative Services & Programmes

All 4 Inclusion’s Disability Awareness sessions bring expert speakers with lived experience to schools, businesses, and events, fostering empathy and practical understanding. Their Inclusion Awareness talks further challenge audiences to build equitable spaces, while Motivational Speaker engagements share stories of overcoming adversity to spark resilience. Each service is fully customisable and rooted in real-life insights that drive action and change

Building Bridges Through Dialogue

Loneliness affects four times more disabled adults than non-disabled peers and can lead to serious mental-health consequences. By hosting free webinars, group forums, and a bi-weekly podcast, All 4 Inclusion provides safe, inclusive spaces where participants can share experiences, learn practical coping strategies, and form lasting friendships

A Vision for an Inclusive Future

Guided by the social model of disability—which asserts that societal barriers, not impairments, disable us—All 4 Inclusion’s mission is to expand its online community and reach every corner of the UK. Their values of person-centred support, collaboration, and empowerment ensure that every initiative puts the individual’s ambitions and well-being first.

As part of the UK release of Fighters, we’re highlighting Changemakers across the country—charities and non-profit organisations using film to inspire social change and inclusion. Just as Fighters tells the story of resilience and equality in the boxing ring, AFK (Action for Kids) equips disabled and neurodiverse young people to fight for their own potential—on the sports field, in the workplace, and beyond.

Impact by the Numbers

Last year, AFK supported 725 young people with disabilities or neurodiverse conditions to achieve their goals. Of those, 155 gained crucial employment skills through tailored placements and workshops, while 178 accessed mobility equipment—like powered wheelchairs and adaptive sports gear—that opens up new opportunities for sport, study, and social life.

Innovative Programmes Driving Change

AFK’s Impact and Innovation programme combines long-standing services with new offerings designed to boost independence and life skills:

Employer Visits & Work Placements | In partnership with the National Theatre, The Old Vic, Arriva, Fireshine Games and more, these visits and four-week accredited placements (e.g., at Bikes For Good Causes) let participants explore careers hands-on.

Employment Workshops & Masterclasses | Led by AFK staff and corporate partners (Vodafone, Accenture, Netflix, Metropolitan Police), sessions cover professional communication, personal branding, interview success, and sector overviews.

Leadership Programme | For ages 11–25, plus alumni, this co-creative series empowers emerging leaders to advocate for accessibility and shape inclusive solutions.

Independent Travel Training | Tailored one-to-one coaching helps young people safely navigate public transit for school, work, and social life.

Self-Employment Support | From business planning to mentorship with corporate sponsors, AFK’s programme gives aspiring entrepreneurs the tools to launch and sustain their own ventures.

From Humble Beginnings to Lasting Vision

Founded in 1992 by Sally Bishop after she raised funds for a child’s powered wheelchair, AFK has grown from a grassroots charity into a national force for empowerment. Today, AFK’s mission—to remove barriers and unlock potential—is guided by its social model of disability, which holds that society must change to include everyone, rather than asking individuals to conform.

Join the Fight For Inclusion

Every disabled or neurodiverse young person deserves the chance to thrive. Over the past decade, we’ve cultivated strong partnerships with distributors and brands of all sizes, including a nationwide collaboration with Odeon Cinemas, which has seen us curate 24 titles under the Diverse Cinema programming banner. This latest move into distribution solidifies our commitment to bringing bold, transformative storytelling to audiences across the UK and beyond.

Fighters

Acquired from Ben & Jack Studios and directed by Michael Grimmett & Jack Tompkins, Fighters follows Matt Edwards, a lower-limb amputee boxer determined to secure his amateur boxing license. His pursuit highlights systemic barriers faced by disabled individuals in sports and everyday life. The film features disability advocates such as Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and ‘Fury the Gladiator’ Jodie Ounsley, shining a light on ongoing inequalities while championing resilience and hope.

50 Hours Underwater

Directed by Shahrzad Mazloumsaki and produced by Lifton Media, 50 Hours Underwater documents the extraordinary mission of Maldivian diver Shafraz (Shaff) Naeem. His record‑breaking 50‑hour dive spotlights the devastating environmental impacts threatening marine ecosystems, offering a stirring call to action for ocean preservation. It also underscores the power of community solidarity, as an international support team rallies behind Shaff’s mission.

Both films are set for a Q3 theatrical release, followed by digital availability. As we celebrate our 10th anniversary, we’re proud to take this next step, reinforcing the importance of the cinematic experience in an era dominated by on-demand viewing. Thank you for supporting us over the years, and stay tuned for more updates on Fighters and 50 Hours Underwater—we can’t wait to share these incredible stories with you.

Set to arrive in UK cinemas on 7th March, Woman of… marks a bold and deeply personal collaboration between Polish filmmakers Małgorzata Szumowska and Michał Englert. Shortlisted as Poland’s Oscar contender for Best International Feature, the film explores the life of Aniela (Małgorzata Hajewska), a trans woman navigating decades of sweeping social and political change in post-communist Poland.

Expanding on Szumowska and Englert’s reputation for empathetic storytelling, Woman of… spotlights an underrepresented community. Aniela’s journey mirrors Poland’s own transition from Soviet influence to a modern Europe—an evolution that has brought new freedoms but still leaves many individuals on the margins. By framing the story of a trans woman in a society often slow to embrace LGBTQ+ rights, the film poses timely questions about identity, acceptance, and the cost of living authentically.

Notably, Woman of… features numerous trans and non-binary cast members in both trans and cis roles. This inclusive approach lends a tangible authenticity to Aniela’s emotional struggle. In a nod to iconic Polish director Andrzej Wajda, the title references his seminal works Man of Marble and Man of Iron, aligning this contemporary narrative with a tradition of Polish cinema that challenges societal norms.

While the film’s universal themes resonate anywhere, the UK release particularly appeals to British audiences with Polish heritage and those invested in queer cinema. By focusing on the hardships, resilience, and ultimately the dignity of its protagonist, Woman of… stands as a powerful human drama that crosses cultural barriers. It promises to spark conversation, provoke empathy, and underscore the urgent need for legal and social reforms—both in Poland and beyond.

Abraham Adeyemi’s new short film, Chasing The Night, is a stylish romantic drama that explores the complexities of connection and conversation. Supported by Film4, this 15-minute gem features Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù (Gangs of London, His House) and Deborah Ayorinde (Riches, Them) as Leon and Fatimah, two successful Black Brits who, after a pop-up restaurant date in South London, find themselves drifting through the city in a bid to prolong their evening.

From the moment they hop into a taxi, Chasing The Night immerses us in the vibrant London nightlife, with each location offering a new slice of the city’s charm. The cinematography is sleek, capturing neon-lit streets and intimate corners that reflect both the excitement and hesitation of its characters. Adeyemi’s direction deftly balances quiet tension and playful spontaneity, keeping the pacing tight while still allowing enough space for subtle emotional beats.

One of the film’s biggest strengths is the palpable chemistry between Dìrísù and Ayorinde. Their dialogue and interactions are charged with what is said—and, crucially, what remains unspoken. You sense there is a weight on their minds, a conversation they’re both avoiding and Adeyemi carefully unravels these layers as the film heads toward its final act. The result is a sense of authenticity that resonates long after the credits roll.

Chasing The Night premiered on the festival circuit throughout 2024, garnering awards at S.O.U.L. Fest at the BFI and qualifying for both BAFTA and BIFA. Its official online release is set for February 25th on both Omeleto’s YouTube channel and Vimeo via Short of the Week, following in the footsteps of Adeyemi’s award-winning debut short No More Wings.

With its sharp visuals, standout performances, and a well-crafted narrative, Chasing The Night provides a compelling snapshot of London’s after-dark energy—and the unspoken truths we carry into the night. Whether this is just the beginning for Leon and Fatimah remains to be seen, but fans will surely be hoping for a longer exploration of their story in a feature-length follow-up.

Irish short film Room Taken, directed by newcomer Sarah McCann and executive produced by Colin Farrell, is an understated yet profoundly moving exploration of human connection. Shortlisted for the 2025 Oscars ®, the 18-minute film tells the story of Isaac (Gabriel Adewusi), a young homeless man, and Vitoria (Brid Brennan), a blind widow, who develop an unlikely bond after Isaac secretly moves into her home.

At its core, Room Taken delves into the shared pain of isolation. Isaac, struggling with the realities of homelessness and his status as a refugee, contrasts with Vitoria, whose blindness and widowhood have left her socially disconnected. Their shared space becomes a quiet battleground where their vulnerabilities meet, and healing begins. The film’s greatest strength lies in its exploration of how these two forms of isolation—one imposed by circumstances, the other by physical limitation—transform through an unexpected relationship.

The performances are understated yet immensely powerful. Brid Brennan imbues Vitoria with a tender dignity that captures both her strength and fragility. Gabriel Adewusi’s Isaac is equally compelling, balancing quiet desperation with glimpses of hope. Together, their chemistry lends authenticity to the narrative, drawing viewers into their shared moments of understanding and tension.

Colin Farrell’s involvement as an executive producer adds weight to the project, and his endorsement captures the film’s heart. “It treats loneliness and grief and the struggle of the immigrant with such a gentle hand, bringing its character and narrative threads together beautifully” Farrell said in Variety. His belief in the film speaks volumes, further elevating its profile in the international film community.

In its brief runtime, Room Taken tackles themes of grief, loneliness, and prejudice, while offering a poignant commentary on Ireland’s growing hostility toward refugees. The film’s compassion feels timely and vital, reminding audiences to see the humanity in others amid societal divisions.

Room Taken is a tender, evocative work that wears its heart on its sleeve. It reminds us that connection can be found in the most unexpected places, and its resonance lingers long after the credits roll.

This touching short has been shortlisted for the 2025 Oscars®.

Spike Lee and Quentin Tarantino are two of the most celebrated directors of our time, both renowned for their bold cinematic styles, sharp dialogue, and memorable characters. They are both auteurs with distinct and instantly recognisable styles. Lee is celebrated for his vibrant portrayals of Black life, infused with social commentary and a unique visual flair that draws heavily upon a documentary style. Tarantino, on the other hand, is celebrated for his genre-bending narratives, blending homage with a darkly comic sensibility that frequently pushes boundaries of taste and decency. However, beneath the surface of their artistic brilliance lies a deep-seated ideological divide that has fuelled a long-standing feud. Their conflicting views on race, filmmaking, and social commentary offer a fascinating case study into the broader debate surrounding artistic freedom and social responsibility within popular culture.

Contrasting Perspectives

Quentin Tarantino and Spike Lee comments on each other before their feud

Spike Lee’s filmmaking is profoundly informed by his identity as an African American man, using cinema as a potent platform to amplify Black voices and expose societal injustices. His works, such as Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X, dissect themes of racism, class disparities, and the Black experience with an unflinching honesty, often delivered through a dynamic visual language that blends realism with poetic flourishes. He sees cinema not simply as entertainment but as a tool for social change, challenging audiences to confront uncomfortable truths. This commitment to social commentary is woven into the fabric of his narratives, shaping his characters, themes, and distinctive visual style.

Quentin Tarantino, conversely, adopts a more postmodern, genre-bending approach, drawing inspiration from a melting pot of cinematic influences, ranging from spaghetti westerns and blaxploitation films to kung fu movies. He views himself as a cinematic “hip-hop artist”, “sampling” and remixing elements from diverse genres to craft something wholly original. While Tarantino acknowledges the gravity of historical events like slavery, he believes that tackling them head-on, even if controversially, can facilitate healing and dialogue. His approach prioritises style and entertainment, weaving social commentary into the subtext rather than foregrounding it with the same directness as Lee.

The Genesis of a Feud

The roots of their discord can be traced back to the early stages of Tarantino’s career, with Lee expressing disapproval of Tarantino’s frequent use of the N-word in films like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and True Romance, the latter of which Tarantino wrote but did not direct. This artistic choice was a point of particular contention for Lee, who felt its usage was excessive and insensitive. Tarantino, however, defended his decision, arguing that it reflected the authentic language of the characters and environments he depicted.

Vintage Rare Spike Lee Interview on Tarantino Feud, Denzel & Sam Jackson choosing sides!

Their clash intensified with the release of Tarantino’s Django Unchained, a spaghetti western set against the backdrop of slavery in the Antebellum South.6 While Tarantino intended to confront the brutality of American history through this genre lens, Lee dismissed it as trivialising and disrespectful to the historical trauma of slavery, stating, “slavery is not a spaghetti western.” Lee refused to see the film, highlighting the profound difference in their perspectives.

The tension surrounding Django Unchained was further amplified by a historical anecdote from the set of Crimson Tide, a film on which Tarantino did rewrites. Denzel Washington, who has collaborated with both Lee and Tarantino, reportedly stopped production to confront Tarantino over his use of the N-word. This incident, coupled with similar concerns raised by Samuel L. Jackson, who also worked on Django Unchained, illustrates the persistent unease surrounding Tarantino’s approach.

Beyond the N-Word

The heart of their conflict extends far beyond the use of a single word. It underscores a fundamental divergence in their filmmaking philosophies and their understanding of the relationship between art and social responsibility. Tarantino’s penchant for genre-bending and stylistic experimentation, often blending violence with dark humour, has led some to accuse him of exploiting sensitive subject matter for entertainment value. Lee, on the other hand, consistently prioritises authenticity and social responsibility, aiming to represent marginalised communities with the nuance and respect they deserve.

Their contrasting views mirror a wider societal discussion about the role of art in addressing social issues. Should filmmakers avoid sensitive topics or tackle them head-on? Is it possible to entertain while simultaneously promoting social change? And who has the right to tell whose story? These questions lack easy answers, leading to a range of perspectives within the public and within the artistic community.

A Microcosm of Societal Tensions

The feud between Lee and Tarantino functions as a microcosm of the larger cultural tensions surrounding the portrayal of race and history in popular media. Their discord reveals the diverse ways audiences perceive and respond to social commentary or the absence of it. Some viewers appreciate Tarantino’s bold, unrestrained style, while others find it offensive and irresponsible. Similarly, some applaud Lee’s unwavering commitment to social justice, while others perceive his work as overly didactic.

Both Lee and Tarantino have made indelible marks on cinema, pushing boundaries and challenging conventions. They have sparked crucial conversations about race, representation, and the power of storytelling. Their feud, though contentious, underscores the potent ability of movies to provoke dialogue, challenge perspectives, and ignite passionate debate about the role of art in reflecting and shaping our world.

This summer, horror enthusiasts are in for a treat with the release of the British supernatural horror film, “The Moor.” Directed by Chris Cronin, this chilling tale will hit UK cinemas on June 14th and be available on Digital HD from July 1st. The film stars Sophia La Porta, David Edward-Robertson, Elizabeth Dormer-Phillips, and the late Bernard Hill, promising a captivating and haunting experience.

“The Moor” tells the story of Claire, who is drawn back to her traumatic past when Bill, the father of her murdered childhood friend, seeks her help to keep the killer behind bars. With the aid of psychic Eleanor, they venture into the haunted moor believed to be the boy’s final resting place. What they encounter is far more sinister than they ever imagined, with dark forces lurking beneath the surface.

Chris Cronin’s directorial debut has already garnered critical acclaim, receiving nominations for Best Director and Best Film at Total Film’s FrightFest Awards 2023 and winning Best Scare. Cronin, a Yorkshire native, emphasizes the emotional aftermath of tragedy rather than the violence itself, exploring themes of grief, guilt, and unresolved trauma through the lens of horror.

In Cronin’s words, “Genre lets us take a look at very human and painful situations and make them larger than life, forcing us to re-examine them.” This approach promises a thought-provoking and spine-chilling narrative that will resonate with fans of the genre.

“The Moor” will feature special screenings and Q&A sessions across the UK, including events at City Screen Picturehouse in York and Broadway in Nottingham, providing audiences with a deeper insight into the film’s creation and themes.

Don’t miss the chance to experience this uniquely British horror film that delves into the supernatural fears rooted in the Yorkshire moors.

Who is responsible for bringing audiences to cinemas? The answer is complex, encompassing venue owners, distributors, filmmakers, actors, film festivals, marketing teams, and film institutes. Anyone involved in the value chain plays an important role in that final decision for a member of the public to opt to buy a ticket. However, the most crucial aspect is our collective organisation as an industry to ensure the effective use of the resources and skills each role contributes. Not only that, but there is a clear overarching strategy that taps into all parts of the industry to ensure interest in independent films.

The UK independent screen sector needs urgent help: between reduced financial support, cinemas struggling to remain open, and an over-reliance on the bigger Hollywood studio films, the key to fixing the problems faced specifically by the independent film sector is a national focus on audience development. Implementing new ways to attract, retain and grow audiences across the U.K.

A recent report by Pact, a membership body representing independent UK producers, highlighted “The U.K.’s independent film sector is struggling and is now at the point of market failure“ The key factors Pact identified were the rising production and talent costs making it harder to have a positive return on investment and also audiences aren’t returning back to cinemas since the pandemic.

The UK Documentary Film Council also recently released an open letter stating, “Production funding for independent docs is chronically low and support for development, let alone distribution and exhibition, is practically non-existent. Sustaining careers in these conditions is all but impossible aside for a relatively privileged few, which has direct implications for filmmaker wellbeing and the docs sector’s devastating lack of diversity.”

I feel like there needs to be an URGENT British Film Summit where filmmakers can get together and try to figure out how to save our dying independent film industry. We have the talent in front and behind the camera. We just lack opportunities/funding.
— Jed (@Jedshepherd) December 1, 2023

Writer/Director, Jed Shepherd states his call to action.

Tim Richards, CEO of the cinema chain Vue, who is also the outgoing chair of the British Film Institute, has also commented on the current climate in U.K Cinemas, stating “Next year is going to be really, very, very tough“. Everyone across the sector agrees things are bad, and with an estimated 45% of the UK’s independent cinemas operating at a loss by the end of the 2023/24 financial year, how do we begin to tackle the problem?

Examining the problem

Both Pact and the UK Documentary Film Council rightly highlight the need for better funding mechanisms and support for independent producers. Given our exhibition work at Big Picture Film Club, particularly with our UK-wide partnership with Odeon Cinemas, I believe that the problem is even more fundamental: a lack of a cohesive UK-wide audience development roadmap. 2018 saw a record-breaking 170 million cinema admissions, the most since 1971. However, it’s also important to note that only 3 out of the Top 20 grossing films that year were original films, not remakes, spin-offs, sequels, or reboots.

Since 2014, original films (in this context) have never made up more than 30% of the top 20 Box Office films for that year in the UK. All of those who did were released from a major Hollywood studio. This underscores a critical issue of the current landscape. Major studios can use their existing IP Movies as their own audience development tool. For instance, each $200 Million+ Marvel film and its associated marketing and brand tie-ins effectively act as an advert and an audience development tool for the next set of films – wash and repeat. Because of this successful approach in recent years, many will resonate with the legendary Martin Scorsese in his critique of the dominance of superhero movies. However, even Disney hasn’t had the continued success it thought it would have post-2019’s Avengers: Endgame.

Independent films by their nature do not have this “wash and repeat” process at their disposal. Their focus is largely on original storytelling. Therefore, to support the independent sector, the focus should be on nurturing audiences to discover new films with original stories and to take a chance on watching them in the cinema. Viewed in this context, Disney’s “dominance” and the flailing independent sector is not solely a result of Disney crushing independent cinema, but partly due to a lack of a cohesive audience development vision for the UK independent screen sector. Put simply, we need to make the public care to watch more independent films with original stories at the cinema. And reduce any existing barriers that prevent them from doing so.

Streaming

How has streaming impacted the independent film sector?

Whether it’s SVOD (Subscription Video on Demand), AVOD (Ad-Supported Video On Demand), or FAST (Free Ad-Supported TV), what we can broadly describe as Online Video Subscriptions are here to stay in the short to medium term. The spending in the UK for High-End TV is at record levels. With this investment, streaming platforms have offered us an unprecedented amount of choice at our convenience. This is especially true for key demographics of people for whom regular trips to the cinema – especially for independent films – are neither a priority, due to lack of time/commitments or their current financial situation doesn’t allow for.

However, in an increasingly bloated streaming market, even Netflix has realised the value of having a limited theatrical release of some key titles, underscoring the value of the cinema experience in a streaming world. The cinema experience uniquely immerses you in a way streaming platforms cannot. It liberates you from the decision fatigue of choosing what to watch, allows you to disconnect from home distractions and offers a special communal experience shared with others.

Let’s Get Working

Last year, the British Film Institute released its Screen Culture 2033 roadmap, stating its aim was to establish “greater interconnectivity and collaboration within the UK Screen Sector“. The report serves as a welcome initial step towards guiding the UK film industry’s right path. Now, we need to establish firm commitments and proposals that expand on this, especially in audience development and engagement initiatives

What solutions can we implement to address this situation? The degree to which we can implement any solution largely depends on the actions of the Department of Culture, Media & Sport and the resources they allocate to key screen-sector funding bodies. Importantly, we must propose solutions that tackle key issues, offering both immediate remedies and sustainable medium and long-term strategies. Here are our suggestions for consideration:

A renewed focus on audience development strategy programs that actively encourage work across the value chain: Whilst there is a need for regional and specific development programs. By not engaging the entire value chain in audience development, it also means we as an industry are not utilising the full range of expertise across the different job roles and disciplines. In part due to a culture of siloing

Reinvestment Tax: Implementing a tax system on ticket sales, akin to France’s ‘Cultural Exception‘ policy, to directly reinvest in audience development for independent cinema. This approach means a portion of every ticket price would support film exhibition and audience development, allowing the success of big Hollywood studio films to directly fund the UK’s independent sector.

More support for local film festivals: Local film festivals are an established way for local audiences to embrace independent films. However, the decimation of local authority budgets across the UK has meant that if Film Festivals do not have access to BFI Funding (via regional Film Hubs) they face a huge financial burden to remain sustainable. Access to private funding/sponsorships for film festivals would therefore provide an important lifeline. Tax incentives that allow for local businesses within the region to receive additional tax credits for sponsoring a film festival in their locality should be considered. This approach is crucial, particularly for supporting film festivals and audience development programs outside major cities.

A new press-linking initiative: Audience development initiatives rarely include or address press engagement. Press and marketing are essential components of audience development and film promotion. What is needed is greater support for not only “established” outlets but also platforms, websites, podcasts, independent journalists, bloggers, etc, to have greater access to talent and to attend key events (i.e. premieres, Film Festivals). This could include the establishment of a press database for the BFI. This will allow for new and emerging media outlets and personnel to be made aware of key opportunities.

A focused commitment to young audiences: Ultimately, any long-term audience development proposal needs to help build a new relationship that people have with the cinema. The best way is to ensure young people have access to and value what cinemas can bring. A commensurate focus should also support independent films that aim to attract a younger demographic. Into Film, a charity for film in education, has done some great work in this area for the last 10 years.

Direct Support To Independent Cinemas: During the pandemic, the Department of Culture Media and Sport provided a Cultural Recovery Fund. This supported 209 cinemas across England, part of a wider cultural enrichment strategy that could allow the fund to continue in some capacity over the financial year. Bristol’s Watershed Cinema recently announced that local funding for the venue will stop from April 2024. Unfortunately, many independent cinemas will find themselves in this position in the coming year.

Improved Tech Solutions For Prints & Advertising: From our own experience and those of the distributors we partner with, the cost of delivering movies to the cinema (done via a Digital Cinema Package or DCP) and the cost of licensing via the British Board of Film Classification is prohibitively expensive for smaller releases. This allows less money to be put into the marketing of the film, which in turn affects audience engagement. A startup or private company can potentially develop new technical solutions using funding sources like Innovate UK.

Better, More Transparent Data: Data collection around Box Office gross has been well-established for some time. However, research and audience sentiment analysis are much less so. In November 2023, BFI published a report Measuring the Economic Value of Cinema Venues, surveying over 2000 cinema goers. Building on this research, to also include groups who don’t actively engage with the cinema is needed on an ongoing basis.

Moving Forward Together

More than anyone single suggested proposal, what is important is there is a collaborative spirit within how different parts of the value chain help develop audiences. This has typically been missing within a siloed film industry. Indeed, the work outlined above is more than what can be done by a single organisation.

If the sole focus is simply funding more films, there won’t be an audience to be receptive to those films. An audience development-first approach is necessary for this reason. Exhibition companies like Eleven Fifty Five and We Are Parable, along with independent cinemas, have actively led and trialled their respective initiatives, achieving great work. However, now is the time for a truly comprehensive industry-wide approach. To ensure independent cinemas and films engage a receptive audience and fully realise the value that the independent screen sector brings, proactive measures are necessary.
