The Friends cast is perfect. All six leads truly embodied their characters, had pitch-perfect comedic timing and felt like real friends. Now, over 20 years after the last episode, audiences still know all the Friends’ main characters and their personalities. Even if they haven’t watched the show. Which is all down to the great work of Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer. That said, for fun, let’s try to envision who would play Friends’ lead roles in 2025.

To accomplish this, I will try to pick actors who are not yet huge stars, though some may have high-profile credits. Just to avoid this being a star-studded fan casting. Plus, the players will be in their mid-20s to early 30s. Like the original cast when they started.

Monica – Hari Nef

Throughout her relatively small career, Hari Nef has showcased many of Monica’s key qualities. Her role in Barbie demonstrated her comedic talent and her caring nature. Additionally, Assassination Nation platformed her more cutting wit as well as a vulnerable side that could be well utilised for Monica’s insecurities. Also, given that she stands out and plays well as part of an ensemble cast in both projects, it’s undeniable that Hari would make a great pick for the Friends’ mother figure.

Chandler – Jacob Batalon

Could there be a more perfect modern embodiment of Chandler Bing than Jacob Batalon? His turn as Ned in the MCU Spider-Man films shows that he can do pretty much any type of comedy you can throw at him. He is pitch-perfect as the funny, loyal best friend archetype. Coupled with this, his sweet small-scale courtship with Angourie Rice’s Betty Brant in Far From Home provides a great basis for him to build on with Chandler and Monica’s relationship storyline.

Phoebe – Geraldine Viswanathan

Phoebe Buffay wears her heart on her sleeve. She is also unpredictable, with a sarcastic, sometimes dark sense of humour. Geraldine Viswanathan can nail sarcasm and emotionally honest moments. Her underappreciated work in Drive Away Dolls proves it. Meanwhile, Miracle Workers: End Times gets many big laughs from her delivery of dark punchlines. Seriously, imagine Phoebe in a post-apocalypse scenario. You will end up with something like Geraldine’s performance in Miracle Workers: End Times.

Joey – Jacob Elordi

You see, Joey Tribbiani is an actor, he’s also charming, a devoted friend, and one of TV’s most beloved himbos. Who else could pull that off? Well, as Saltburn‘s Felix is a charming himbo who defends someone he considers a friend, and other projects like Priscilla and Euphoria indicate he can play a variety of roles, which he could utilise for Joey’s acting projects, Jacob Elordi would be fantastic as the jobbing actor.

Rachel – Aimee Lou Wood

Initially sheltered and naive, Rachel Green rises to have her own career while maintaining a welcoming personality. She is Friends’ most well-known character. If there is any equivalent that instantly comes to mind, it’s Aimee Lou Wood’s Aimee from Sex Education. Aimee also has a privileged background and appears naive at first, but she also goes through a lot of development and keeps a sense of warmth throughout. Plus, Aimee is really funny, having won a BAFTA for her performance.
Ross – David Corenswet

Yes, the new Superman would make a fantastic Ross Geller. He can play both the charming and darker aspects needed for Ross’ love life, see his Projectionist performance in Pearl. The sense of humour that saves Ross from being a repulsive presence is also on full display in his interviews. The dedication to acting we see in his role as Hollywood‘s Jack means he can also pull off Ross’s passion for Palaeontology.

For such a simple premise it’s amazing how The Office has impacted popular culture. Not just in English-speaking territories but across the world. With the Australian version recently premiering, now is a good time to investigate why the series has had such longevity. As well as global appeal.

Experimental and Mundane

Despite only running for 14 episodes the original version of The Office is arguably one of the most influential TV shows of the 21st century, which can largely be boiled down to three things.

First, it helped to cement and popularise the single-camera, no-laugh-track sitcom format. A rarity in the British TV landscape at the time. This was helped by its use of a mockumentary style. This made the production feel more real. Allowing us to relate more to the characters and thereby making the funny and poignant moments hit harder.

<button

The cast of the U.S adaptation of ‘The Office’

Secondly, it focused on scenarios and characters that were incredibly relatable for viewers. From workplace romance to the cringe-worthy boss trying to be a friend to his employees without realising the power dynamics in the relationship, to the threat of downsizing and the awkward interactions and personalities you encounter in office work, many viewers were able to identify with what the Office brought to TV.

And lastly, it acted as a platform/launching pad for some great UK comedic and acting talent. The show would catapult most of its central cast, with relatively small CVs at the time, including Ricky Gervais, Martin Freeman and Mackenzie Crook into lengthy media careers. Plus it included bit appearances from future big-hitting UK talent alongside established names. Including Stephen Merchant, Ralph Ineson, Olivia Colman and Martha Howe-Douglas. Among others.

International Appeal

Since the Office ended in 2003 it has been remade in many different countries. These include Germany, Brazil, the USA, France, Canada, Chile, Israel, Sweden, the Czech Republic, Finland, India, Poland, Saudi Arabia and now Australia. These projects have had mixed responses. The US version is considered to be just as good, if not better than, the original series. The German and Brazilian adaptations also have high audience ratings on IMDb. Some adaptations may not be rated highly like Poland, Israel and Finland but they were at least popular enough to have several series made of them. Meanwhile, some remakes that only ran for a single series are rated very highly (Chile) while others are viewed very unfavourably (Canada).

Does It Always Work?

With so many different adaptations, all of which adhered to the mockumentary style, writing that focuses on realistic or/and relatable situations and most of them helping to give platforms to up-and-coming as well as smaller already active talent, what else is crucial for other adaptations of The Office to succeed?

This is a much more difficult question to answer. Many would say that it has to bring something new to the table rather than just parroting the original. And with examples like the more slapstick and over-the-top antics of the US version and the darker streak of Germany’s version that would appear to be the magic ingredient.

However one can argue that adapting to a different cultural context alone provides a reason for a remake to exist because office culture differs across geographical boundaries. For example, the commentary on racism in the Israeli and Chilean versions are pointed observations on racism in both countries. Yet one is looked on more favourably than the other. Additionally, the focus of the Australian version on the boss being a woman places a lens on workplace gender politics. A unique thing for a normally male-dominated franchise.
Ultimately for a new Office project to work it doesn’t just have to do something new with the old formula while also recapturing the surface elements that made the original show work. It must also create characters that draw us in through compelling personalities that audiences attach to. The scenarios, presentation and stars are part of The Office’s appeal and a unique take on the material is a great thing to have. Although without an emotional anchor, The Office is just as dull as actual office work.

If you google the term “Black sitcom”, the majority of results will be from 20-40 years ago. When we hear the phrase, there is a common batch of shows we all think of: ‘The Cosby Show’, ‘The Jefferson’s’, ‘Family Matters’, ‘Good Times’, ‘Living Single’, ‘Sanford & Son’ and other classics. Although there are modern examples, it’s the classics that remain in our collective consciousness. And for good reason— They were trailblazers. They stood out. Each story was unique: Black family, living in the projects, father and son running a junkyard, a dry cleaner and his wife get rich, a Black doctor and lawyer raising five kids in Brooklyn, a house full of Black women as roommates, courting success and love— in that order.

Starting in the 1960s, there were only TWO Black sitcoms in existence: ‘The Bill Cosby Show’ and ‘Julia’. In contrast at the height of Black sitcoms— the 1990s— over 50 Black-led comedies were on the air. But every year since the new millennium began, there have been fewer and fewer Black sitcoms airing (there are currently ten listed on Wikipedia), and only a handful streaming, even though the African American population has grown each year (from around 30M to the current 44M). With all the talk of inclusion, the centuries-long battle for equality and civil rights, somehow there seems to be fewer Black stories being told than when the fight began. And the ones we do have don’t seem any different from their White counterparts.

There’s a generic template that seems to have been applied to American sitcoms across the board. Take the show ‘Kenan’ starring Kenan Thompson of ‘Goodburger’, ‘Kenan & Kel’, and ‘Saturday Night Live’ fame: You could swap the cast of his show about a widower raising his two daughters with a White family, and nothing would change. There’s nothing specific to the Black experience or Black culture built-in. Many so-called Black sitcoms are just repackaged White shows, with nothing but their ethnicity changed. Much like the famous “Black Barbie” fiasco in the 1980s, they merely added brown skin to a White mold. There are a few exceptions, shows like ‘Insecure’, ‘Black-ish’, and ‘The Carmichael Show’, but for the most part, the Black sitcom as we knew it has died.

But is that a bad thing? As we are wont to say, Black people, Black culture, and the Black community are not monoliths. We’ve adapted to a new standard of rights, wealth, and a rapidly changing place in the world. What we need to feel heard, what we find to be funny and relatable, has changed. And the scope of Black culture has changed. Usually, the word gentrification refers to White families and businesses claiming what was previously “Black” territory. But in many ways, Black culture has gentrified America itself. Perhaps even the world as a whole. For example: Having a voluptuous figure, singing with “soul”, urban wear and athleisure— all of which had been previously labelled “Black”, are now common in every aspect of American culture. In many ways we dominate the athletic world, as well as entertainment and pop culture (think of the origins of many meme and slang terms). So, if Black culture is slowly becoming the dominant culture, perhaps we don’t need niche shows that cater to the people we used to be. Maybe that’s a tradition that served its purpose, and it’s time to let go. Maybe we’ve outgrown that need, and new ways to express ourselves are just around the corner. Do I still love to go back and watch classic Black sitcoms? Definitely. I wish there was a new season of ‘Boondocks’ or ‘A Different World’? Sure. But I also know that when we are craning our necks at the past, we very often miss seeing the future. So I’m taking off my “love goggles” and looking at what’s to come, not clinging to what used to be. And maybe that’s the point.
