For more than 11 years, Big Picture Film Club has championed independent filmmakers through screenings, editorial coverage, audience engagement and culturally relevant film events. Now, building on that public-facing work, we are expanding into a new area: corporate screenings.

Following our 2025 collaborations with partners including Citibank, Clyde & Co and Covington, we are continuing to work with major UK companies on an internal screening programme designed to support DEI, wellbeing and awareness-led conversations in the workplace. These events pair films with educational discussion, often including live or virtual Q&As, to help organisations engage staff in a more meaningful way.

We are now inviting filmmakers to submit films for consideration.

We are primarily looking for educational short films, ideally 15–30 minutes in length, although we will consider longer works if they can be edited into a shorter version. We are especially keen to hear from UK-based filmmakers who have films that align with key UK awareness themes, including Mental Health, Disability & Accessibility, Neurodiversity, Women & Gender Equity, LGBTQ+ Inclusion, Race & Ethnicity, Workplace Inclusion, Environment & Climate, and Community & Belonging.

Films can be in post-production or currently on the festival circuit. Private Vimeo or YouTube links are welcome, though we are generally not seeking films already freely available to the public. If filmmakers or cast members are available to take part in in-person or virtual Q&As, that is a major plus.

To submit, simply complete the form below. If your film is a fit for one of our partners, we will be in touch. Rights holders will be paid for any screenings, and filmmakers will retain full ownership and control of their work. We are not acquiring films for distribution — we are creating new opportunities for them to be seen.

From Trading Floor to Fight Floor

Boxing movies love a comeback story, but Unlicensed aims its punches somewhere more specific than the usual underdog arc. Written, directed by and starring Mark Hampton, the British indie drama follows disgraced city broker Danny Goode, a man who’s fallen a very long way in a very short time. After serving time for insider trading, Danny walks out of prison to find the City has moved on without him. The money’s gone, the status is gone and his relationships with his estranged wife and young son are hanging by a thread.

Short of cash and hiding a growing gambling addiction, Danny spots a fast way out: an unlicensed boxing match with a hefty cash prize. It’s a terrible idea – which, of course, is exactly why a man on the edge takes it.

Gambling as the Real Opponent

Hampton has said he wanted to “do a different take on the traditional boxing movie,” swapping the rags-to-riches fantasy for a story about what happens when a man whose life is built on risk suddenly runs out of safety nets. Having worked in the City himself, he channels that world’s high-stakes, win-lose mentality into Danny’s secret habit.

“Danny’s an addict. That’s the real battle he’s fighting,” Hampton explains. “Like so many addicts, he hides his addiction even from himself – it’s only when he starts to open up about it that his journey towards redemption can really begin. Danny’s biggest fight isn’t in the ring.”

The timing feels pointed. Recent UK figures suggest tens of thousands of young people are already experiencing gambling harms, with knock-on effects at home, at school and on mental health. Unlicensed folds that reality into its character study, asking what happens when a culture of “just one more bet” collides with family responsibility.

One Shot at Redemption

Visually, the film leans into sweat-slicked gyms, cramped locker rooms and the almost claustrophobic intimacy of the ring. Behind-the-scenes shots show Hampton taking a real pounding as both performer and director, surrounded by a small, focused crew. The boxing itself is brutal but grounded, a physical extension of Danny’s internal spiral – every round another attempt to punch his way out of the corner he’s backed himself into.

Underneath the bruises, this is a story about priorities. Hampton, a father himself, frames Danny’s arc as a shift from material success to emotional accountability: learning that the real win isn’t the purse, it’s whether he can show up for his son.

A British Indie With Something to Say

Based in Cambridge, Hampton is no stranger to the screen – with recent appearances in Heads of State (Amazon Studios), Lift (Netflix) and One More Shot (Sky Cinema) – and has picked up awards on the festival circuit for both acting and directing. Unlicensed extends that run into feature territory, premiering at the London Independent Film Festival, with packed screenings in Cambridge, Soho and at London’s Genesis Cinema.

“LIFF has been a champion of independent cinema for many years and gives emerging filmmakers a fantastic platform,” Hampton says, crediting the festival and the Genesis team for backing a film that tries to do more than just stage a good scrap.

Where to Watch

Unlicensed is available now on VOD, including iTunes, Google Play, Amazon Prime Video and Rakuten, with the trailer streaming via Britflicks. For fans of character-driven boxing films like The Fighter or Bleed for This – and anyone interested in how gambling culture seeps from trading floors into living rooms – this British indie might be worth going a few rounds with.

Ever since I was a kid, I’ve always loved watching movies. I don’t really have a “favorite” genre because everything I watched was so random. I’d go from romcoms to gore in a snap or the other way around. Since I’ve always loved watching movies, I have probably Googled every “best movies to watch” or “must-watch movies before you die” list out there. With that, I found and watched some of the most iconic movies that are being referenced to this day.

Even though it’s been years since their release, they can still compete with the new releases we see in the cinemas and on streaming services. Let’s get into it!

Forrest Gump

Forrest Gump has been one of those movies I can watch over and over without getting tired of it. Forrest is such a pure, kind character who somehow ends up in the middle of huge historical moments, like fighting in the Vietnam War and meeting presidents. My favorite scene is when he just starts running, and people join him without even asking why. It was a gentle yet powerful reminder that sometimes you don’t need a reason to start something. You just do it. This movie taught me that life can be unpredictable, but if you keep moving forward and stay kind, amazing things can happen.

Inception

The first time I watched Inception, my mind was completely blown. I couldn’t stop talking about it for weeks because I was so amazed at what happened, even though the movie was pretty long. It’s about a group of people who enter dreams to plant ideas, and the way they explore different dream levels feels like solving a puzzle while running a marathon.

If there’s one thing I loved about this movie, aside from Leonardo DiCaprio, it is that our thoughts and beliefs shape our reality. It also made me think about how powerful the mind is… and yes, that spinning top at the end still makes me wonder if it’s all a dream. Before you start watching this, make sure you have a good internet service provider if you’re streaming, so you can really understand what the movie is about.

Fight Club

Okay, I might be breaking the first rule of Fight Club by even talking about it… but I can’t help it. This movie is just that good. It’s about a guy who’s completely fed up with his boring life, and then he meets Tyler Durden — a wild, unpredictable man who changes everything. They start a secret fight club where strangers punch each other to feel alive, but soon it spirals into something much bigger and much darker. The plot twist, though, is definitely mindblowing. I could never forget what this movie did to my brain.

2001: A Space Odyssey

This movie isn’t for everyone, but I loved how different it felt from anything else I’ve seen. It’s slow and quiet, and it makes you feel tiny compared to the universe. My favorite scene is when HAL 9000, the spaceship’s computer, says, “I’m sorry, Dave, I’m afraid I can’t do that.” It’s chilling and unforgettable. The movie made me realize how far technology could go and how it can both help and harm us. It’s one of those films that leaves you with more questions than answers, and I kind of love that. Since it’s a relatively old movie, you can also watch this on traditional TV like DISH TV. Make sure to watch this!

Mean Girls

On Wednesdays, we wear pink, of course. I can’t miss this on our list. It’s literally the ultimate guide to surviving high school drama. You’ll meet Cady, a typical girl who gets pulled into the most popular group in school called The Plastics. At first, she’s just trying to fit in, but before she knows it, she’s caught up in gossip, lies, and the infamous Burn Book. My favorite scene has to be the cafeteria map breakdown. It’s hilarious how they explain where every group sits, and honestly, every school has that.

Final Thoughts

These are my top 5 most iconic movies of all time. No matter what you try to watch in this list, I’m confident that you will love it as much as I did. Just make sure that if you’re streaming them online, you need to have a fast internet connection so you can enjoy the entire movie. Happy watching!

Netflix released a new movie titled Brick (2025). It’s completely different from the 2005 Brick movie, so don’t be confused. It’s a sci-fi mystery and thriller about a couple named Tim and Olivia (played by Matthias Schweighöfer and Ruby O. Fee), who suddenly find their apartment sealed shut by strange black bricks. No way out, no phone signal, no internet. I recently watched this movie because I saw it upon opening Netflix.

My honest thoughts? It’s decent, but it can do better. I’d line it up for a TV streaming session with my friends or family, but I wouldn’t watch it over and over again. Let’s talk more about that below.

What Is Brick All About?

Tim and Olivia have gone through a misadventure, and Olivia wants to move to Paris to start anew. However, Tim is buried in his job as a game programmer and doesn’t want to leave their current home. But before they can even work through their issues, they get hit with a bigger problem: their whole apartment is suddenly bricked in overnight. It actually started as a typical people-stuck-in-a-room movie, but it’s way beyond that.

The black bricks aren’t just made of concrete. They’re magnetic, can’t be broken, and do weird things when metal gets near them. Tim and Olivia meet other neighbors who are also trapped, and together they try to figure out what’s going on and how to escape.

If you’re planning to watch Brick, it’s only available on Netflix, but hopefully, it’ll become available on other streaming services as well.

What I Liked About Brick

The black bricks themselves are one of the best parts of the movie. They’re magnetic, impossible to break, and react violently to metal. I can’t even imagine myself being surrounded by that thing. The idea of being suddenly trapped in your own apartment with no way out pulls you in right away. Tim and Olivia’s strained relationship, especially their conversation about the miscarriage, adds emotional depth and gives more weight to their survival choices. I also thought the hidden cameras in the smoke detectors and the landlord’s creepy monitor room were among the most unsettling discoveries. It reminded me of one movie I watched on DISH TV deals.

What I Didn’t Like About Brick

The tone shift in the last act from slow, claustrophobic suspense to more of an action-thriller breaks the atmosphere that the first half worked to build. Some characters, like Ana and Marvin, are barely developed, so their fates don’t carry much weight. The reveal about the bricks comes late in the story and feels rushed, so it kinda felt less satisfying. Also, the final twist is clear but underwhelming after all the build-up. Many people were confused about the final scene because it ends so abruptly after the reveal.

Wrapping Up

I’d rate Brick a 6/10 in terms of overall impact. The premise is solid, but I think it’s kind of mediocre in some areas. It’s not the perfect German film I would talk about so enthusiastically, but it is still a great watch for those who are looking for sci-fi thrillers. The ending might confuse you in the same way it did for many viewers. Still, it’s the kind of movie you might think about afterward, even if it’s just to figure out what really happened.

You’re my soda pop, my little soda pop. That song has been playing in my head nonstop for weeks already, and I’m pretty sure you’ve heard it too while scrolling on TikTok and other social media platforms. KPop Demon Hunters is a Netflix Original that was released on June 20, 2025. Since then, it has been creating many trends online.

So here, I will be sharing my thoughts about this movie and why I think it’s a great movie to watch. It’s available on Netflix exclusively, but may be available on other streaming deals as well. Let’s start!

What Is KPop Demon Hunters About?

KPop Demon Hunters is about Huntr/x, a popular K-pop girl group that also works as demon hunters. Long ago, demons were trapped behind a magical barrier called the Honmoon, and it’s the hunters’ job to keep it strong using their voices. Huntr/x continues this mission, but their leader, Rumi, starts losing her voice because she’s secretly part demon.

While trying to keep this secret, Rumi and her group face a new threat: a rival boy band with a hidden agenda that could weaken the Honmoon and set the demons free. As tensions rise, Rumi must decide how far she’s willing to go to protect both her friends and the world.

Fans Loving the OST Album

What I really loved about this movie is the songs throughout the film. My favorites are Takedown, Free, Soda Pop, and What It Sounds Like, but honestly, all the other songs are also fire. The voice actors and everything about the songs (the beat, lyrics, and vocal quality) are extremely commendable. While watching the movie, I literally looked up if the album is already available on Spotify just so I could listen to it again. Just make sure you have a fast mobile internet like Boost plans, if you plan to watch it while you’re not at home.

Here is the complete list of songs from the soundtrack album:

TAKEDOWN – TWICE

How It’s Done – HUNTR/X

Soda Pop – Saja Boys

Golden – HUNTR/X

Strategy – TWICE

Your Idol – Saja Boys

Free – Rumi, Jinu

What It Sounds Like – HUNTR/X

Love, Maybe – MeloMance

Path – Jokers

Score Suite – Marcelo Zarvos

KPop Demon Hunters Is a Solid 9/10

What I loved the most about KPop Demon Hunters is the character development of Rumi. You really see her journey from someone hiding a huge part of herself to finally embracing who she is. Her struggles with her demon heritage, her relationships with her bandmates, and the tough choices she has to make all felt real and relatable. Beyond that, the visual quality was also superb, so it made the movie even more engaging to watch.

I would highly recommend anyone who wants to watch this movie to have fast internet, so you can really enjoy the movie. The songs that were also used throughout the film were catchy, emotional, and perfectly matched each scene. That’s why the love of the people for this movie is really understandable.

The Bottom Line

KPop Demon Hunters is a super fun movie with lots of action and catchy K-pop songs. If you enjoy K-pop, you will easily love this movie. The characters are also very likable. We look forward to more releases like this. Though it’s pretty obvious that Netflix is riding the K-pop wave right now, this movie felt fresh and unique. If you’re planning to watch this movie, you’re making the right choice. Happy watching!

Hosting a music festival isn’t just about booking performers and setting up stages. What happens if the crowd gets out of control or a fire breaks out? How do organizers ensure the safety of attendees, staff, and performers?

Addressing these risks ahead of time is critical to maintaining a safe environment. Without proper planning, things could go wrong fast, and everyone’s safety could be at risk.

From crowd control to medical support, there are many factors to consider. In this article, we’ll discuss the key safety aspects that need attention for a smooth, secure festival experience.

Crowd Control and Site Layout

Poor crowd management at music festivals can turn deadly when safety measures are ignored.

BBC notes that in 2021, a Houston festival saw ten deaths and hundreds of injuries after a crowd surge. Security staff had warned about the risks, but organizers failed to take proper action. Despite signs of distress, performers continued their sets, highlighting serious failures in event safety planning.

To avoid such tragedies, event planners must enforce strict crowd control measures and emergency response protocols.

Effective crowd control begins with a well-thought-out site layout. Paths between stages, vendors, and restrooms should be clearly defined. Designated emergency exits must be easily accessible to all attendees.

Barriers should be used to guide crowd movement and prevent overcrowding. Regular monitoring of crowd density helps spot potential hazards before they escalate. Trained staff should be stationed in strategic locations to assist attendees.

Marked signage is essential to direct people to important areas like first aid stations. With proper planning and crowd management, festivals can run smoothly and safely.

How do seating arrangements affect crowd control?

Seating arrangements influence how crowds move and gather within the festival area. Well-placed seating sections can reduce congestion, prevent crowd surges, and create natural flow paths. Offering designated seating areas for different ticket tiers also improves accessibility while keeping pathways clear for emergency responders if needed.

Vendor and Food Safety

Food safety plays a vital role in creating a positive festival experience. Vendors must follow strict food handling and hygiene standards to prevent health risks.

Key measures to maintain food safety include:

Ensuring all food preparation areas have proper sanitation facilities.

Training staff to handle food safely and recognize signs of contamination.

Implementing protocols for responding to foodborne illness issues.

A well-monitored food safety plan helps protect festivalgoers and keeps the event running smoothly.

WHO notes that foodborne illnesses come from bacteria, viruses, parasites, or chemicals that contaminate food. Chemical contamination can cause immediate poisoning or long-term health issues like cancer.

Many foodborne diseases lead to severe complications, long-term disabilities, or even death. Common food hazards include harmful bacteria, toxic chemicals, and parasites that pose serious health risks.

Clear labeling of allergens in food offerings can help prevent allergic reactions among festivalgoers. Adequate food storage is essential to prevent contamination and spoilage.

How do festivals ensure water quality for food vendors?

Clean water is essential for food preparation and sanitation. Organizers must provide reliable water sources, conduct regular testing for contamination, and ensure vendors follow strict handwashing protocols. Having backup water supplies and filtration systems can prevent disruptions in case of unexpected shortages or contamination issues.

Fire Safety and Emergency Response Plans

Fire safety must be a top priority at any music festival. Identify areas where fire risks are high, such as near food vendors and stages. Ensure fire extinguishers are placed throughout the venue and staff know how to use them. Avoid using toxic firefighting foams like aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF).

According to TorHoerman Law, these foams contain harmful chemicals that pollute the environment and endanger human health. AFFF contains PFAS, which has been linked to various health problems and environmental damage. Manufacturers of AFFF are even facing legal action due to their harmful effects on people and water supplies.

The average AFFF foam lawsuit settlement amounts vary, depending on the case, with significant legal consequences for those involved. These lawsuits have led to financial and reputational impacts for AFFF manufacturers.

A comprehensive emergency plan should always be in place to protect attendees and staff. Designate clear emergency exits and train staff in evacuation procedures. Regular drills ensure the team is prepared for any emergency. Having medical staff on-site also ensures quick response times for health-related incidents.

Why should festivals have dedicated fire safety marshals?

Fire safety marshals oversee risk assessments, inspect vendor setups, and enforce safety regulations. Their presence ensures quick intervention in case of fire-related incidents. Trained personnel can spot potential hazards before they escalate, minimizing risks for attendees and staff.

Medical Support and First Aid Services

Having medical support on-site is essential for any festival. First aid stations should be placed in visible, easily accessible locations. Staff should be trained to handle common injuries and medical emergencies.

NIH mentions that event plans should be reviewed and approved at least 30 days before the gathering starts. A detailed post-event review helps identify strengths and areas needing improvement for future events. Analyzing data from past gatherings ensures better safety measures and smoother operations next time.

Communication with local hospitals and emergency services is crucial for quick response times. Medical teams should be prepared for issues such as allergies, asthma attacks, and dehydration.

Offering hydration and cooling stations helps prevent heat-related illnesses. Designated areas for those with special needs can enhance overall safety. Clear signage and well-stocked medical stations will keep attendees safe during the event.

Why should medical teams collaborate with local hospitals?

Close coordination with hospitals ensures faster response times for severe cases. Pre-established transport routes, designated treatment zones, and real-time communication with medical teams streamline emergency care. This collaboration prevents delays and improves survival outcomes for critically ill or injured attendees.

Security and Surveillance

Security staff should be stationed at key entry points for crowd control. Metal detectors and bag checks should be mandatory at the gates. Surveillance cameras around the venue help monitor the crowd and detect potential issues.

Security Journal Americas mentions that modern surveillance technology goes beyond recording video by using advanced analytics to detect security threats. AI-powered features like facial recognition, object detection, and behavioral analysis help identify risks in real-time.

Systems can flag unattended bags or match individuals to known threats, sending instant alerts. Machine learning algorithms refine these capabilities over time, improving accuracy and adapting to evolving security challenges.

Additionally, communication between security teams and local law enforcement is essential for quick responses. Security staff must be easily identifiable and approachable to attendees. A reporting system for suspicious activity should be in place.

How is nighttime security different from daytime security?

Nighttime presents unique risks, including reduced visibility, increased intoxication-related incidents, and higher chances of theft. Security teams should use enhanced lighting, infrared cameras, and specialized night patrols to maintain safety. Adjusting strategies for different times of the day improves overall event security.

Hosting a safe music festival requires careful planning and attention to potential risks. Strong crowd management, vendor supervision, and emergency response strategies are essential for a secure event. Creating a culture of awareness and preparedness helps keep attendees safe in unpredictable situations.

Using advanced surveillance technology enhances security and allows for quick threat detection. Coordinating with local authorities ensures a faster response to emergencies and better crisis management. Safety measures should be as important as the entertainment itself. A festival’s success is measured not only by great performances but also by its dedication to protecting every guest.

With the short documentary ‘A State of Rage’ (2024), Academy-nominated German director Marcel Mettelsiefen skilfully presents how wars scar and shape the personality of children as he focuses his lenses on the West Bank conflict between Palestine refugees and Jewish settlers.

The movie’s main focus is the children living within the conflict; the documentary also presents their relatives, friends, and neighbourhoods, showcasing how deeply living in a state of war can affect how people interpret their surroundings and the world. Not forgetting its crippling effects on mental health and the creation of generational trauma.

Ten-year-old Jana resides in the Jenin Refugee Camp with other Palestinians who had to leave their area when the state of Israel was created. The documentary opens with Jana being questioned about the meaning of peace alongside her best friend, Heba, a girl of the same age. Their looks alternate between playful and sombre as they present their perceptions.

Later, the other key participants are shown, 16-year-old Renana, a resident of the Havat Gilad religious outpost founded by Jewish settlers. The teenager muses about the bucolic scene where she leaves and starts narrating what is supposed to be a calm life but with the looming sense of incoming conflict. Renana’s father was killed in a drive-by shooting, and she is supported by her sister Naomi, 14, who shares her views on life in the West Bank and their Arab neighbours.

Jana lives in an area where members of the Palestine Armed Resistance can be seen during broad daylight, including when there are protests on the streets. These same people brandishing assault rifles are seen as terrorists by opposing sides. The Havat Gilad settlement was established as an unauthorized community in 2002 and has been dismantled by official forces and rebuilt by the settlers on many occasions. Still, it was granted legal status by the Israeli government in 2018.

The documentary helps the viewer understand how layered and complex the situation on the ground is. Mettelsiefen, does the difficult job of finding nuance in this subject, by allowing children to talk about their lives, in such a way, that their words will resonate in the minds of those watching and hearing them, and interviewees are treated with fairness and without condescension. Mettelsiefen’s storytelling strengths lie in filming the on-the-ground reality and interviewing ordinary people, particularly children. This is proven by his 2017 Academy Award nomination for ‘Watani: My Homeland’ (2016), which followed the struggle of a family to survive the ongoing Syrian war.

A State of Rage

The children’s age in ‘A State of Rage’ allows the understanding of how an environment, narratives, stress, conflict propaganda, and other aspects can permeate their psyche as shown in their words infused with prejudice, hatred and daydreams of carnage. Not only the violence they have endured and the stress and triggers they go through in their daily lives but also how they impact their choices regarding their future.
There is also the fear of the parents of their children joining the violent action as, at a young age, many are eager “to go to war” to defend the values they were raised upon and to seek retribution for relatives and members of their communities. Mettelsiefen, with a nuanced look, portrays the appetite for aggression that breeds in the human mind. On both sides, children are seen brandishing toy guns, playing play-fight, or playing armed combat video games as if they are preparing for what awaits them as late teenagers and young adults.

They are in a state where their childhood and innocence are starting to be overtaken by the sounds of flying bullets and screams of pain. Not only do their expressions shift but also the way and tone when they speak about such matters and their dreams as imagining what they will do in the near future is a way to keep moving forward in a desperate situation.

The camera paints a deeper picture of not only their conditions but also how Mettelsiefen interprets them, so lighting and architecture become characters, and households start to resemble the subjects of the film, even those with better resources. ‘A State of Rage’ doesn’t indulge itself in appellative soundtracks and scholar talking heads, choices that set it aside from other pieces on the matter. Without a doubt, the short documentary acts as a coming-of-age tale, allowing outsiders of the Israel-Palestine dispute to see the side of those affected by the decisions of the powerful and the impacts on their livelihoods and futures.
In a Western world where grown-ups have become nothing more than kidults, this documentary is relevant as it shows how rage slaughters naïveté and how the lines between childhood innocence and adulthood maturity are blurred.

As I write this article the “alleged” Gaza genocide is nearing its 12th month. Thousands of Palestinians have been killed by Israel’s military action, with official death figures almost certainly underestimated. The mass murder of Palestinians by Israel, made possible by Western governments and defended/obscured by news media, is unjustifiable and a stain on our collective humanity.

And although Gaza must remain in focus it’s worth looking at the ramifications this destruction has had on communities across the world. Today we’re going to look at the Film and TV Charity’s recent report analysing the mental health impacts the events in Gaza are having on UK Arab, Muslim & Jewish film and TV workers.

Disclaimer

This survey doesn’t give any details on the respondent’s views on the Gaza genocide. Therefore any claims that results are skewed by bias towards actions taken by any group is unacceptable. Israel’s actions don’t represent the worldwide Jewish community. To claim they do is antisemitic. Similarly, to make any hostile inferences based on the contributions of Arab and Muslim respondents is racist and Islamaphobic.

Findings

From December 2023 until early January 2024 the Film and TV charity distributed an online survey among specific industry groups. Intending to find out how the events in Gaza and Israel had affected particular industry workers. As well as to form a picture of prior discrimination faced by Muslim, Arab and Jewish workers.

The final report found Jewish; Arab and Muslim workers overwhelmingly felt their mental health had deteriorated since October 7th 2023. Both cohorts overwhelmingly said that UK media organisations treated their community unfairly (80% of Arab and Muslim workers and 68% of Jewish workers). Also, similar percentages of both groups felt the events of October 7th and beyond resulted in the deterioration of how they are treated by others in the workplace (41% of Arab and Muslim workers and 40% of Jewish workers).

Additionally, 40% of Arab and Muslim respondents said they had already had negative industry experiences because of their identity pre-October 7th. 80% of the same communities agreed the industry was institutionally discriminatory towards them. While over half felt unsupported by employers after October 7th and thought the industry was unwelcoming and unsafe.

A significant number of Jewish and Arab and Muslim participants reported the events on and after October 7th as having impacted their work well-being in some way. Plus both were likely to encounter regular hostility towards their community in the workplace. However, a greater percentage of Muslim and Arab respondents reported being negatively impacted in both cases.

Recommendations

After compiling the findings the charity organised several discussions with industry leaders to propose solutions to these problems.

Some of the main solutions included (among other things):

Providing training and education across the industry on what islamophobia, anti-Arab discrimination and antisemitism are. Clear guidelines on how to spot and report incidents (as well as robust reporting systems). With a zero-tolerance policy towards these attitudes.

Carrying out schemes to ensure diverse on-screen representation to all the discussed communities. As well as creating programming specifically aimed at being inclusive to “‘Muslim’, ‘Asian’ or ‘Arab'” communities.

Fostering inclusive industry attitudes. This can be done by respecting important holidays for Jewish staff and education on religious and cultural practices relating to Muslim and Arab staff. Creating Jewish, Arab and Muslim work groups as well as an industry-wide Arab and Muslim group to act as advocates for community issues. Recognising the diverse spectrum of Jewish identity (race, ethnicity, identity, or religion). Setting up hiring targets for Muslim and Arab staff within industry hubs, and enforcing the rights of Muslim and Arab workers to join police-approved marches and post information from recognised sources on social media without fearing for their professional security.

An independent review of news content across major channels relating to what is happening in Gaza and how it impacts staff from all discussed communities.

In Closing

These recommendations definitely are a good thing. That said other measures should be considered regarding the current tragedy in Gaza.

Over the past year, the UK media has consistently misrepresented or demonised Palestinians as well as Muslims and Arab people. Framing the Israel-Palestine “conflict” as stemming from religious hatred of Jewish people rather than oppression and occupation. With demonstrations concerned about Palestinian safety often framed around questions of them being hateful or potentially antisemitic. Thereby conflating denouncement of Israel’s actions with Jewish people’s safety, despite many Jewish communities speaking out against Israel.

If the industry is to rebuild trust with these communities it must ensure safety for all these groups, educate workers on how to root out bigotry, it must stop the conflation of Jewish identity with Israel’s actions, recognise the experiences and humanity of Palestinians, along with Muslims and Arab cultures generally, and stop framing their rights as conflicting with Jewish people.

Dragon Ball DAIMA is set to take fans on a brand-new adventure, streaming on Crunchyroll from 11th October. As the latest addition to the Dragon Ball franchise, DAIMA commemorates the 40th anniversary of Akira Toriyama’s original manga, first published in 1984, which has since sold over 260 million copies worldwide. The new series promises to carry forward the legacy of Dragon Ball, while introducing fresh storylines and characters in a world loved by fans for decades.

Toriyama’s legendary creation began with Dragon Ball, following the adventures of Goku, a young warrior with a mysterious past. The saga continued with Dragon Ball Z, where Goku faces increasingly powerful foes and develops unforgettable friendships. Dragon Ball Super, the latest episodic series before DAIMA, pushed the boundaries of the Dragon Ball universe, introducing multiversal tournaments and godly powers. Now, with Dragon Ball DAIMA, the beloved characters are back, but this time, they’ve been shrunk due to a mysterious conspiracy!

Directed by Yoshitaka Yashima and Aya Komaki, and featuring music by Grammy Award-winning artist Zedd, Dragon Ball DAIMA brings a new twist to the series. Goku, along with his friends, must navigate a new challenge in the Demon Realm, where they face off against a young Majin named Glorio. With its bold new story and stunning animation by Toei Animation, DAIMA promises to capture the hearts of longtime fans and newcomers alike.

This release comes at a poignant time for Dragon Ball fans, as it marks one of the first major expansions of the franchise following the passing of its legendary creator, Akira Toriyama. The new series will undoubtedly honour his legacy by continuing to push the boundaries of what Dragon Ball can offer.

Dragon Ball DAIMA is more than just a new series—it’s a celebration of one of the most iconic anime franchises of all time. With the full force of Crunchyroll behind its release, fans across the UK and beyond can experience this next chapter in the Dragon Ball saga as it unfolds.

Be sure to catch the latest adventure in the world of Dragon Ball starting 11th October on Crunchyroll, with new episodes simulcast weekly alongside the Japanese broadcast.

Odyssey 2024, the UK’s largest film festival in conversation with Greater China and Chinese communities worldwide, is set to take place from 16 September to 16 October. This year’s theme, “Food and Travel,” promises a rich exploration of how these two elements connect people across cultures, much like cinema itself.

The festival will showcase over 60 curated films, ranging from fresh voices in cinema to classic works by established auteurs. Notably, the festival will open with the 30th Anniversary 4K restoration of Wong Kar Wai’s iconic film, Chungking Express (1994). This Hong Kong classic, renowned for its vibrant depiction of love, loneliness, and canned pineapple, will kick off the month-long celebration of cinema.

Curated with a focus on cross-cultural understanding, Odyssey 2024 will feature a diverse lineup of films that delve into the universal themes of food and travel. Films like Between Brothers and Secret of Forking Paths from Taiwan offer a nostalgic look at how food ties us to our past, while Fresh Off Markham highlights the immigrant experience in Canada. The festival also touches on more sombre themes, with films like Eggs and Asubha exploring the struggles of displaced communities.

A film festival with a purpose

Odyssey 2024 isn’t just about screening films; it’s about fostering dialogue. The festival includes cutting-edge discussion panels and exclusive Q&A sessions, providing a platform for audiences to engage with filmmakers and delve deeper into the stories being told.

As the festival continues to grow, it remains committed to its mission of celebrating cinema’s power to connect people and create shared experiences. Whether through the taste of familiar food in a foreign land or the journey of characters searching for a better life, Odyssey 2024 invites audiences to explore the rich tapestry of stories that bind us together.

For more information and to book tickets, visit the festival’s online platform at www.odysseychinesecinema.uk

Kowloon Walled City, located in Hong Kong, was once the most densely populated place on Earth. Originally a Chinese military fort, it became a sprawling, anarchic city of its own. By the 1980s, it housed around 30,000 residents within its 6.4-acre confines. The labyrinthine structure was notorious for its maze-like alleys, multi-story buildings haphazardly stacked upon one another, and a near-total absence of sunlight reaching the lower levels. This lack of oversight from the government led to rampant crime and illicit activities, making Kowloon both a living hell for some and a sanctuary for others. The city was demolished in 1993, but its legacy lives on, continuing to inspire filmmakers worldwide.

Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In is a recent addition to the canon of films inspired by Kowloon Walled City. Set in a dystopian near-future, the film follows a group of vigilantes who protect the inhabitants of a lawless, overcrowded urban sprawl eerily reminiscent of Kowloon. The film’s dense, chaotic cityscape, complete with narrow alleyways and stacked buildings, is a direct nod to the Walled City’s architecture. The filmmakers have openly acknowledged Kowloon as a significant inspiration, aiming to capture its claustrophobic, dystopian essence to enhance the film’s gritty atmosphere.

Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner is often cited for its groundbreaking visual style, heavily influenced by Kowloon Walled City. The film’s depiction of a sprawling, decaying urban environment with towering structures and neon-lit alleys echoes the chaotic density of Kowloon. While Blade Runner’s Los Angeles is a futuristic setting, the filmmakers drew upon Kowloon’s maze-like complexity and vibrant street life to create a sense of oppressive urbanization and societal decay.

The iconic anime film Ghost in the Shell, directed by Mamoru Oshii, features a futuristic cityscape that bears a striking resemblance to Kowloon Walled City. The film’s detailed urban environments, with their tightly packed buildings and narrow, shadowy passageways, reflect the Walled City’s architectural chaos. Oshii has mentioned that the dense urban settings in Ghost in the Shell were inspired by the real-life complexity and unregulated growth of Kowloon, underscoring the themes of control and freedom within the film.

Gareth Evans’ The Raid: Redemption is a high-octane action film set within a dilapidated, high-rise building controlled by a ruthless crime lord. The film’s setting, a towering labyrinth of danger and decay, evokes the spirit of Kowloon Walled City. While not a direct adaptation, the sense of entrapment and the intense, claustrophobic environment of the building are reminiscent of Kowloon’s infamous reputation as a haven for criminals and a place where law and order were virtually nonexistent.

Judge Dredd (2012)

Dredd, directed by Pete Travis, plunges audiences into the brutal, dystopian world of Mega-City One, where towering apartment blocks house thousands of residents under the watchful eye of the Judges. The film’s central setting, Peach Trees, is a massive, self-contained city block, rife with crime and poverty. This concept is heavily inspired by Kowloon Walled City, particularly its dense population and anarchic atmosphere. The film’s depiction of an isolated, high-rise community mirrors the Walled City’s sense of entrapment and societal breakdown.

Why Kowloon Walled City Continues to Inspire Films

The enduring fascination with Kowloon Walled City in cinema stems from its unique combination of dystopian aesthetics and historical reality. As a microcosm of anarchy and human resilience, Kowloon offers filmmakers a rich, atmospheric setting that highlights themes of chaos, survival, and the human condition under extreme circumstances. Its labyrinthine architecture and lawless reputation provide a perfect backdrop for stories that explore societal decay and the struggle for order within chaos. In an era where urbanization and dystopian futures are prevalent in storytelling, Kowloon Walled City remains a potent symbol of both the darkness and the resilience of urban life.

Freedom on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom, directed by Evgeny Afineevsky and narrated by Helen Mirren, offers a compelling, personal lens on Ukraine’s struggle amidst conflict. Diverging from the broad strokes of geopolitical analysis, the documentary zeroes in on the human stories at the war’s heart. Afineevsky’s approach weaves a narrative through the lives of ordinary Ukrainians—soldiers bearing the scars of battle, families uprooted by violence, and communities clinging to normalcy through shared moments of joy and sorrow.

This film transcends the conventional war documentary format by focusing on personal resilience against a backdrop of ongoing turmoil. From the Maidan Uprising to the recent invasion, “Freedom on Fire” captures a spectrum of human emotion and endurance, presenting a side of the conflict rarely seen by the global audience. It showcases the strength of those who have lived through the war, offering a glimpse into their daily lives, hopes, and fears.

By highlighting the diverse experiences of those affected by the conflict, Afineevsky challenges viewers to consider the individual cost of war, beyond the headlines. The documentary’s strength lies in its ability to humanise a complex issue, making it accessible and impactful for a wide audience.

By crunching numbers, assessing historical data, and considering market trends, the technology provides filmmakers and studios with insights into potential box office performance. This allows for strategic marketing and distribution planning, optimizing the film’s reach and impact.

7. Enhanced Special Effects and CGI

The magic of Hollywood often lies in its breathtaking special effects and CGI. Deep Brain’s AI enhances these visual spectacles by offering tools that streamline the creation of realistic effects. Whether it’s bringing mythical creatures to life or orchestrating gravity-defying stunts, the AI-driven approach accelerates the production of awe-inspiring visuals.

8. Personalized Marketing Campaigns

Tailoring marketing campaigns to individual viewer preferences becomes a reality with Deep Brain’s AI. The technology analyzes audience data, social media interactions, and viewing patterns to craft personalized marketing strategies.

In the interstellar realm of science fiction sitcoms, Red Dwarf and Homeboys in Outer Space charted markedly different courses. One became a beacon of success and cult fandom, while the other faded into obscurity. This contrasting fate of the two shows offers a fascinating window into the genre’s flexibility and the cultural nuances of audience reception.

Red Dwarf a British series launched in 1988, orbits around the misadventures of the last human alive and his motley crew aboard a spaceship. Notably, it featured Danny John-Jules as The Cat, a standout character who added a unique flavour to the show’s diverse ensemble. John-Jules’ role was pivotal, showcasing that a sci-fi series could thrive without succumbing to racial stereotypes.

Homeboys In Outer Space

Conversely, Homeboys in Outer Space an American sitcom that aired in 1996, starred comedians Flex Alexander and Darryl Bell. It envisioned two African American astronauts navigating the galaxy, a concept that promised innovation but was marred by execution flaws. Criticized for shallow humour and lack of depth, the show struggled to resonate with an audience expecting more than caricatured portrayals.

The root of Red Dwarf’s enduring appeal lies in its clever scripting and universal humour, transcending racial and cultural divides. The show wasn’t pigeonholed as a “black show” due to its white lead, perhaps aiding its broader acceptance without the pressure of racial representation. On the other hand, “Homeboys in Space” suffered from inadequate writing and an overemphasis on racial humour, failing to engage audiences seeking nuanced comedy.

Furthermore, the difference in audience reception of sci-fi sitcoms between the UK and the US is notable. British viewers have historically embraced offbeat comedies, including those in the sci-fi genre. In contrast, American audiences’ expectations for sitcoms and sci-fi may have been at odds with what Homeboys in Space offered.

Adding to the complexity is the 1990s cultural context. Red Dwarf arrived at a time of British TV experimentation, while Homeboys in Outer Space emerged amidst American television’s grappling with black American representation beyond stereotypes. The show’s failure thus reflects broader cultural challenges in media representation.

Red Dwarf

“Red Dwarf” and “Homeboys in Outer Space” offer insights into the nuanced relationship between genre, cultural context, and audience expectations. While Red Dwarf succeeded through quality comedy and the transcendence of racial stereotypes, Homeboys in Outer Space faltered, hindered by its writing and the burden of racial representation. Their stories serve as a guide for future sci-fi comedies, highlighting the importance of thoughtful writing, character development, and cultural sensitivity.

“This genre-bending tale brings to life a futuristic fable that fuses spiritual beliefs with inter-generational tensions. Set in the matriarchal ocean village of Iyi, where West African water deity, Mami Wata, reigns via village leader Mama Efe it uniquely brings to the screen a story of mythology, fantasy, and folklore. When the harmony of the village is threatened, two sisters must fight to restore order, as traditions of the past crash with calls from the future.”

With the rise of the digital age, the way we consume movies and television has been revolutionized. Gone are the days when one had to wait for a scheduled time on cable TV to watch their favourite show or movie. Today, we have the luxury of on-demand content right at our fingertips, thanks to streaming services.

But with so many platforms available, which one truly offers the best cinematic experiences? This article will do an in-depth look at the streaming apps that have the best movies. Without any further ado, let’s get into it.

Top 3 Best Streaming Apps for Movie Buffs

#1 Disney+

Disney+, the brainchild of the Walt Disney Company, is not just another streaming service in the crowded digital space. It’s an experience that taps into nostalgia while simultaneously catering to the new-age audience. With an expansive library that encompasses everything from the heartwarming classics of the Disney Renaissance era to the thrilling escapades of Marvel superheroes, Disney+ ensures that the magic of storytelling is alive and well. Furthermore, the platform’s dedication to bringing cinematic experiences to the small screen is evident. Fresh releases, behind-the-scenes exclusives, and unique reimaginings like “The Mandalorian” are a testament to Disney’s commitment to quality and innovation.

In a world of fleeting digital content, Disney+ offers permanence. Families can introduce new generations to the joys of “The Little Mermaid” or “Beauty and the Beast,” while also exploring new tales from the Star Wars universe or diving into the complexities of the Marvel multiverse. Beyond these, the platform’s acquisition of Pixar, National Geographic, and 20th Century Studios has further expanded its horizons. From soul-stirring documentaries to spine-tingling adventures, Disney+ is where dreams come alive.

#2 Hulu

Hulu is the embodiment of modern-day entertainment diversity. Initially launched as a hub for catching up on recent TV episodes, it has since transformed into a formidable content powerhouse. It stands out with its blend of current season episodes, complete past seasons of hit shows and a prolific library of movies spanning multiple genres. The platform’s partnership with various major networks ensures that there’s always something fresh to watch. This agility and currency of content make Hulu a go-to choice for those looking to stay updated with the entertainment world. We should also mention that the Hulu free trial offers a great way to watch the latest movies without spending a dime.

However, it’s not just about quantity with Hulu; it’s about groundbreaking quality. Their foray into original content with shows like “The Handmaid’s Tale” and films like “Palm Springs” has garnered critical acclaim. Furthermore, the platform’s willingness to experiment, as evident from its diverse slate of originals and acquired content, is commendable. Whether you’re in the mood for a timeless classic, a gripping documentary, or a fresh-off-the-cinema movie, Hulu promises and delivers variety in spades.

#3 HBO Max

HBO has always been synonymous with top-tier entertainment. Their reputation for delivering hard-hitting series like “Game of Thrones” and “The Sopranos” set the stage for what premium television content should look like. HBO Max takes this legacy and elevates it to new heights. While it boasts the complete HBO library, it doesn’t stop there. The platform introduces Max Originals, a range of content curated for diverse audiences, from riveting dramas to light-hearted comedies. This, coupled with their timeless classics, makes HBO Max a haven for cinephiles.

It’s not just about the past and the present with HBO Max; it’s a bridge to the future of entertainment. Their recent strategy of releasing major cinematic releases on the platform concurrently with theater releases signals a shift in how we perceive movie-watching. Films like “Dune” and “Wonder Woman 1984” are testimonies to their commitment to bringing grand cinematic experiences to the comfort of our homes. Whether you’re a fan of the golden age of cinema or looking forward to the latest blockbuster, HBO Max seamlessly blends the old with the new, ensuring a comprehensive entertainment experience.

Streaming is Taking Over Cable TV

In the last decade, the entertainment landscape has witnessed a tectonic shift. Traditional cable TV, which once dominated our living rooms, is gradually ceding ground to the more flexible and user-centric world of streaming services. The allure of cable TV was undeniably strong, with its curated programming and scheduled slots for favourite shows. However, the digital age brought with it a desire for on-demand content, where viewers wanted to dictate their viewing schedules rather than adhering to the timelines set by broadcasters. Streaming platforms catered to this very demand, providing a buffet of content that users could dive into anytime, anywhere, and on a device of their choice.

The rise of streaming can also be attributed to its adaptive nature. These platforms not only offered the latest movies and TV series but also invested heavily in original content, creating a unique selling proposition. Shows like “Stranger Things” on Netflix or “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Hulu became cultural phenomena, sparking discussions and generating fan theories worldwide. Additionally, the ability to binge-watch, absence of commercial interruptions, and the option to explore a diverse range of international content made streaming platforms an irresistible proposition. As a result, more households are cutting the cable cord, opting for the tailored, rich, and varied experiences that streaming platforms promise.

Final Thoughts

The world of movie streaming is vast and varied. Each platform brings its unique flavour, ensuring that movie enthusiasts have a diverse palette to choose from. While Disney+ is a treasure trove for family-oriented content, Hulu provides a mix of everything, and HBO Max offers cinematic depth. In the end, the best platform largely depends on individual preferences. However, with all these platforms at our disposal, one thing’s for sure – movie nights have never been better!

Amid a titanic battle between cinematic giants, Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer emerges as a masterpiece during a crowded opening weekend with direct competitor Barbie and the previous weekend’s Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1. Due to this highly-anticipated cinematic showdown and the fact that this is Nolan’s first film since 2020’s Tenet, audience anticipation has been high.

Nolan’s reputation as a visionary director and his penchant for seamless storytelling have raised expectations for Oppenheimer. But while cinematography and script are central to any film’s success, the role of costume designer Ellen Mirojnick’s work in creating a narrative should not be underestimated. In this article, we delve into the essential accessories that significantly shape the characters and enhance the film’s storytelling.

Hats: the Oppenheimer fedora

Many may assume that Mattel’s Barbie has the edge when it comes to marketing opportunities. However, as a defining element of Oppenheimer’s persona, the fedora hat is a contending factor for the marketing of Oppenheimer. The hat’s association with the physicist is deeply rooted in history, dating back to Oppenheimer’s time. It exudes sophistication and elegance, perfectly complementing the character’s intellectual persona.

In fact, the fedora hat became so synonymous with Oppenheimer that fans sought to emulate his style as far back as 2010, with one user on thefedoralounge.com searching for a hat like the one worn by the famous nuclear physicist, describing it as “positively atomic.” Nolan’s and Mirojnick’s attention to detail and their understanding of the impact of fashion on character are evident in the choice of the fedora hat, which, combined with Cillian Murphy’s enigmatic portrayal, adds depth and pathos to Oppenheimer’s on-screen presence.

Eyewear: masking the gaze

The film’s attention to authenticity is evident in the choice of eyewear that reflects the 1940s and 50s. The two main styles are the round frames, worn by many of the scientists working on the Manhattan Project, and the Times American Optical glasses, similar to the Ray-Ban Wayfarer, worn by Robert Downey Jr’s Lewis Strauss. These classic designs have proven to be timeless with designer glasses referencing the styles of the 40s and 50s and reimagining them for modern wearers, as shown by the round frames of the Radley from London Retro and the thick top frames of the Remington from Glasses Direct. Glasses can also be crucial in film for adding an air of mystery or impenetrability to a character. This is made most clear through Lewis Strauss, whose motives against Oppenheimer are slowly revealed throughout the film.

Pipes and cigarettes: a pensive persona

Beyond hats and sunglasses, pipes and cigarettes were also essential accessories for characterising Oppenheimer. The act of smoking, particularly with a pipe, adds a pensive and intellectual quality to the characters, further reinforcing the film’s historical setting.

Despite Cillian Murphy’s resolve that he will no longer be playing smokers due to the health issues associated with smoke and tobacco, he admits that portraying the persona of a lifelong nicotine addict was crucial in embodying Oppenheimer. The portrayal of Oppenheimer’s chain-smoking tendencies demands attention to detail in how this accessory is integrated into the character’s behaviour and body language. The act of smoking becomes an integral part of Oppenheimer’s persona, serving as a visual representation of the character’s complexities and internal struggles.

From the iconic fedora hat to the eyewear and the pensive pipes and cigarettes, each accessory is carefully chosen to add depth and nuance to the characters and their stories. By incorporating these key accessories seamlessly into the narrative, Nolan and Mirojnick create a captivating on-screen fashion experience that enhances the overall storytelling, leaving audiences mesmerised by the world of Oppenheimer.
