The semi-nude aging man is dancing in his depleted living room, although he is long past his prime, he shows himself to be in good shape as he performs some boxing moves while holding a whisky bottle, he reeks threat. The environment, with its bleached colours, lighted by a thin sunlight crossing through the windows, mirrors the state he finds himself in. Bernard “Bang Bang” Rozyski was a primetime boxer in his day; now, he is a memory of a bygone era filled with resentment, loneliness, and trauma. This demanding performance, which showcases great corporeal language and emotional depth, is delivered by legendary character actor Tim Blake Nelson (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), who is the highlight of the competent picture drama ‘Bang Bang’ (2025).

Director Vincent Grashaw tells the story of the retired “Bang Bang” Rozyski as he rekindles with his estranged grandson, Justin (Andrew Liner), and trains him in the sport that gave “Bang Bang” his claim to fame but also stole his happiness and innocence from a young age.

The movie doubles as a coming-of-age story for the supporting character Justin, who is played with diligence by Liner and represents a new opportunity at parenting for the lead. Still, it is primarily a character study for Rozyski that peels back the personality of boxers, straying from the clichés of an underdog aiming for a successful comeback to his previous status, thus bringing this fictional tale closer to the reality of the majority of the sweet science gladiators, whom I’ve followed as a boxing writer.

Rozyski’s grudge with former opponent Darnell Washington (Glenn Plummer) bleeds on the screen as an unhealed old scar pouring dark red blood. Washington is a loud boxer reminiscent of the great Black fighters of the past, a departure from Plummer’s more famous past roles. Washington gives a speech to Rozyski about the realities of boxing and life itself, mirroring the late Michael Gambon’s monologue in the British gangster classic ‘Layer Cake’ (2004), and forcing “Bang Bang” to mature.

Another stance where ‘Bang Bang’ avoids clichés is by humanising the cop character, Officer Flores, by not making her a die-hard hero nor a straight-out prejudicial villain, which gains nuance through the acting skills of Daniella Pineda, who Hollywood should consider casting in leading lady roles.

‘Bang Bang’ uses Detroit as its narrative; the movie is immersed in a city that is a far-cry from its glorious Motor City past, but the picture doesn’t go for easy emotions, like showing a ghost town. It presents a mostly blue-collar environment struggling amidst an America that has gone through too many socio-economic crises, thus too much pain. Still, there is room to love, as seen in how a trio of college-age youngsters receive ‘Bang Bang’ or the fondness that the local Polish community shows towards him, as many victorious boxers are a beacon to the places and people they hail from.

The clothing department also helps tell the story, and Rozyski’s golden Trans-Am automobile helps further his character presence as it is a signal to how people perceive their past to have been better than it actually was, how cars are extensions of their drivers’ personalities, and our never-ending addiction to 80s nostalgia, including its negative aspects. Not to forget that the Trans-Am looks gorgeous in the picture.
Another merit is that the feature doesn’t show “the fall of an icon,” a subject that media vampirizes as outlets like as much to make new idols as to destroy them and move on to the other, ‘Bang Bang’ performs the aftermath of the fall, the lingering destructive behaviours and patterns and how the opportunity for redemption can come late and is not guaranteed to be sweet.

As part of the UK release of Fighters, we’re highlighting Changemakers across the country—charities and non-profit organisations using sport and storytelling to inspire social change and inclusion. Just as Fighters celebrates resilience in the ring, The Frank Bruno Foundation channels boxing’s discipline into wellbeing for those battling mental ill-health.

A Punch for Mental Health

Founded in 2017, The Frank Bruno Foundation provides a safe, supportive space for anyone aged 13 and up facing anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, or other challenges. Its flagship Round by Round programme pairs eight weeks of non-contact boxing training with tailored wrap-around support—boosting confidence, self-esteem, and discipline in every participant.

From Youth to Workforce

Originally focused on young people, the foundation expanded in 2020 to serve older adults juggling work and mental health. Referrals—by professionals, friends, or self-referral—begin with an early assessment, ensuring interventions match individual needs. Programs are open to residents of England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with bespoke support for those as young as ten.

Frank’s Vision & Advocacy

Boxing legend and Mental Health Ambassador Frank Bruno MBE founded the charity to give back to his community. His candid discussions of bipolar disorder—and how exercise helped him cope—have shattered taboos in the public eye. Through his autobiography and media appearances, Frank’s honesty empowers others to seek help and speak out.

Campaigns That Deliver Knockouts to Stigma

#LetsClearTheCloud invites people to share personal journeys, helping early recognition of symptoms and showing no one faces mental ill-health alone.

#KnockoutStigma tackles judgment head-on: nearly half of respondents fear speaking up about mental health. This campaign offers a safe platform for testimony, sparking conversations that save lives.

Building Community, One Jab at a Time

Participants describe Round by Round as life-changing: learning footwork in the gym translates into agility in daily challenges. The charity also partners with local mental health services, ensuring participants have access to counselling, peer support, and employment advice.

Let’s head into the boxing ring. We’re going to briefly look over the role of boxing movies within cinematic history, the genre’s conventions and how it has updated itself to see if we can discern why boxing films remain enduring favourites.

A Swift History

Boxing films have played a key role throughout cinema. Early boxing films, helped pioneer documentaries by using limited setups to film real (or reproduced) matches to later show to wider audiences. These films gave wider visibility to women’s boxing, and showcased big stars and historical matches, e.g. Jack Johnson vs. James J. Jeffries – which showed the first African American heavyweight champion (Johnson) winning against a white opponent (Jeffries). Leading to considerable racist backlash.

Since then boxing movies have also become dramatic cinema staples; playing a role in many artists’ development. Silent stars like Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton used boxing movies to grow their names. Filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock, King Vidor, Clint Eastwood, Ryan Coogler and more have received acclaim in the genre. Additionally, the genre helped pioneer feature-length filmmaking (The Corbett-Fitzsimmons Fight), played a role in the transition to sound films (The Shakedown) and helped popularise the beloved training montage (The Rocky series).

Knocking Audiences Out

So why do audiences and creatives continually return to boxing movies? Well, the stories offer great opportunities for emotionally engaging storytelling. They focus on underdogs whose audiences want to succeed or protagonists with fraught emotional lives that provide windows into uncomfortable subjects. Allowing audiences to easily get invested and giving artists the freedom to explore various engaging topics.

Boxing movies also feature fight scenes that go into detail showing the boxers hurt each other (quick edits to show each punch). This coupled with the personal stories built up outside the ring and the physical challenges our protagonist faces, such as gangsters who offer them money at their pride’s expense, powerful ring opponents or foes from the past, help make the action viscerally impactful for audiences and provides great tools for creatives to play with.

These films also often focus on ingrained racist, classist, and patriarchal systems that dehumanize our protagonists. And generally, a boxing movie will end with the boxer either proving their worth, showing that hard work can yield success or the boxer will lose something significant, showing that hard work alone won’t beat the system. There are variations but these dominant elements key into the dreams and realities many audiences face. Making them easy for audiences to identify with.

Finally, boxing films are pleasurably familiar. In an ever-changing industry, boxing movies remain broadly similar. Keeping the genre accessible to new audiences and creatives.

Same Game New Era

But while predictable these films have evolved. After years of ignoring or erasing boxers of colour, international and women boxers the genre has seen a rise in movies focused on telling more stories from diverse perspectives. The genre has also continually experimented with fight presentation to make them feel more immediate. For example, The Fighter replicated televised fight aesthetics to add an element of realism, while Creed used a one-take setup to heighten tension. And there has been a growth in documentaries and biopics to bring renewed attention to important stories from boxing’s history.

Ultimately the boxing film remains a cinematic fixture because it deals with themes that many people around the world can relate to, in ways that get us emotionally and intellectually invested. It provides both escapism and realism, while highly formulaic filmmakers always find new ways to present the stories and they act as a relatable window into the past, showing struggles that ring true across generations.
